Joseph Ludwig was born Jan. 14, 1856 at Erfurt, Sachsen, Germany and came to the United States with his parents when six years of age. The family first located in Wisconsin and later moved to Carroll County where they were among the early settlers of Kniest township. He married Miss Mary Bachman of Breda, Feb. 12, 1884 and they lived in Breda for a year and then moved to Carroll, where they have since resided. Seven children were born to this union. Walter C. Ludwig was killed in an automobile accident Aug. 31, 1930, and the others surviving with their mother are Mrs. Joehn E. Risk (Rose) of Scottsbluffs, Neb.; Mrs. Herman Pietig (Amelia) of Carroll; George A. Ludwig of Los Angeles, Calif.; Joe M. Ludwig of Fresno, Calif.; Mrs. Olga Theobald of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Miss Irene Ludwig at home. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, among them Dorothy Theobald, who makes her home with her grandparents and attends school. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters, Frank Ludwig, Charles Ludwig, Miss Anna Ludwig, Miss Josephine Ludwig and Mrs. Joe Schelle, all of Carroll. Mr. Ludwig worked at the carpenter trade for about a year after his marriage and then was employed for many years in the Ludwig Brothers general and dry goods store, which was located on fifth street and maintained by his brothers, Charles and Chris Ludwig. For the last 15 years Mr. Ludwig was janitor of the southside school building and resigned last year. He was a quiet, unassuming man, who went about his duties in a methodical manner and faithfully performed them. Until he sustained the stroke Friday Mr. Ludwig had never been ill. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul's church and of the Holy Name society and died well fortified with the last sacraments of the church.
