Description	:	Joseph M. Howland died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. S. Jackson in Villisca, Saturday, August 28, 1909 at 4:30 a.m. at the ager of 72 years. The cause of his death was blood poisoning resulting from an abscess on his arm. Joseph M. Howland was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, May 6, 1837 and was married to Margaret Waterman in October 1858. There were born to them five children, one daughter and four sons, Mrs. J. S. Jackson in Villisca, Saturday, August 28, 1909 at 4:30 a.m. at the ager of 72 years. The cause of his death was blood poisoning resulting from an abscess on his arm. Joseph M. Howland was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, May 6, 1837 and was married to Margaret Waterman in October 1858. There were born to them five children, one daughter and four sons, Mrs. J. S. Jackson of this city, Dr. B. M. Howland of Melbourne, Iowa, S. P. Howland of San Francisco, California, B. J. Howland of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, and P. L. Howland of Nodaway, all of whom were present at the funeral. The dependents' wife preceded him to the grave five years ago. Mr. Howland and family moved here from Ohio thirty-eight years ago. He had been a very energetic business man and had also taken a very active part in the city business until within the last few years when he was compelled to retire from business life on account of poor health. Mr. Howland was elected to the office of city mayor in April 1898 and filled this responsible office for tow years. He was also president of the school board at one time and was a member of the city council at different times and was always held in high esteem by those working with him and by the citizens in general. By his death, Villisca loses a most prominent citizen. The funeral services were held at the J. B. Jackson residence Wednesday, September 1, 1909, at 2:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. J. K, Driver.
