Read More	The death of Pearl Leon Howland which occurred at Nodaway, Saturday morning, March 11, 1911, at half past two o’clock has created a very visible feeling of sorrow in Villisca and vicinity, where Mrs. Howland had lived practically all his life and where he enjoyed the respect of a circle of friends as wide as his acquaintance extended. Mr. Howland was taken ill two weeks ago, a victim of pneumonia, but neither his friends nor his relatives realized the gravity of his condition until the announcement was made that he was dead. The shock was most sudden and intense. Mr. Howland would have been thirty-seven years old on Saturday of this week. Born in Villisca, March 25, 1874, he spent his boyhood days here and grew to manhood in this city and when the news of his death reached Villisca, everybody in the town seemed to feel a personal loss. Mr. Howland graduated in pharmacy from Highland Park College at Des Moines in 1906 and clerked for a matter of three years in the drug store of Linn & Neill at Nodaway which business he later purchased. He conducted the drug store at Shambaugh a couple of years also. Mr. Howland was a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church at Nodaway and he had a class of boys in the Sunday School who thought so much of their teacher that they would not consent to let him act as superintendent of the school. And the class in a body followed his beloved remains to Villisca to be present at the interment. He was also a prominent Mason, a member of the Iroquois Lodge at Nodaway for about two years, and lately its secretary hard to find, but it is hoped that the American Yeomen at Nodaway. In all these capacities he lent a whole souled support and contributes an enthusiasm which was a marked characteristic of the man. Mr. Howland always had a jovial word for his neighbor and he seemed never at a loss for something to say which might provoke a laugh. In business he enjoyed a well defined success and his drug store at Nodaway was headquarters for everybody and he did a thriving business which chows how cheerfulness can succeed in the business world. Mr. How.and was the youngest son of six children of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Howland and one of four boys. His eldest sister, whom he never saw, died in infancy in Ohio. The surviving members of his family are three brothers, and one sister; Dr. B. M. Howland of Melbourne, Iowa; Mrs. J. S. Jackson, of Villisca; Solomon P. HOwland of San Francisco, and Burt J. Howland of Portland, Oregon. Dr. Howland and wife and son, Floyd were able to be at the funeral, but the other two brothers could not come. Mr. Howland is also survived by a true and devoted wife in whom the grief attendant upon his demise has settled to a deeper extent, perhaps, than in the case of any other person. Mrs. Howland will continue to make her home at Nodway for an indefinite time and expects to soon have the drug store reopened under capable management. The business will likely be sold. Funeral services for Mr. Howland were conducted Tuesday morning at the Nodway Presbyterian Church at half past ten o’clock by the pastor, Rev. G. J. Cardy and were attended by a large number of sympathizing friend and relatives. The body was brought to Villisca, Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the Villisca Cemetery by the side of the deceased parents The obsequies at the cemetery were conducted by the two Masonic Lodges of Nodaway and Villisca and Worshipful Master G. B. extol was master of ceremonies, the Villisca Lodge performing the ritual. A number of Villsica friends went over to Nodaway and attended the funeral, among them, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Boise, Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Hulling, Mrs. W. B. Woodward, Ddr. and Mrs. G. T. Rumbaugh, Mrs. C. W> Brelsford, Mrs. Fred Jackson, Mrs. and Mr. W. A. Stallions, Mrs. C. C> Waterman, Mrs. Lucia Sisel, Mrs. M. T. Means, Miss George Watts, Miss Hellene Poston, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Gridley, and Mrs. J. S. Jackson and family. Five brother of Mrs. Howland, all of Essex, also attended the funeral. They were G. F. Bussard, John Bussard and wife, William Bussard and wife and son Joseph, M. J. Bussard and wife and S. T. Bussard. Her uncle, Henry Blank of Imogene and his daughter, Mrs. Frank Hayes of the same place were also present as was Mrs. Maggie Lewis of Imogene.
