We are called upon to chronicle the death of Joseph Newton Longcor, who was born at Benton, Elkhart county, Indiana, on Dec. 10, 1844, and whose death occurred at the farm home southwest of Creighton on October 1, 1931. Mr. Longcor came with his parents to Harlan, Iowa, when 8 years of age and grew to manhood there. He was married at Harlan, Sept. 28, 1871 to Sarah M. Kemp to whom five children were born, one daughter, Nina Annette, preceding the father in death on December 29, 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Longcor moved to Wisneer, Nebr. in 1882 and resided on a farm for two years, thereupon, removing to Keya Paha county and residing on a homestead for seven years. It was during this period of residence that Mr. Longcor was attacked by an Indian whose atrocity was severly injurious and so incapacitated Mr. Longcor that his family considered him to have been murdered. Mr. Longcor eventually recovered from the onslaught. The family removed to Harlan, Iowa in 1891, and in 1903 came to Creighton where they resided for 18 years, then removed to the farm home 10 miles southwest of Creighton, where Mr. Longcor died October 1 st at nearly 87 years of age. Mr. Longcor was readily classed as a Nebraska pioneer, having endured the many hardships through which these sturdy presdecessors of the prairies were subjected. He was a man of very quiet demeanor, yet cheerful in his neighborliness and hospitable to his every friend. He had lived quietly with his son, Dwight, during the past ten years in reasonably good health until about a year ago when a dropsy ailment began to manifest itself gradually inducing a heart affliction from which he succumbed. The immediate and surviving relatives are: the widow, Mrs. Longcor, three sons, Fred N. of Valentine, Nebr.; R.A. of Millboro, S.D.; and Dwight T. of Creighton; one daughter, Mrs. Edith L. Gear, of Dunning, Nebr.; ten grandchldren and one great grandson. Funeral services were held last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M.E. church in Creighton being conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wm. E. Wilson. Many friends of the family attended the funeral services in final respect for the memory of a true friend. Interment of the body was made in the Creighton Greenwood cemetery.
