Novak Sr., 72, died Thursday evening of last week in a Waterloo hospital following a four days illness and an operation performed the same afternoon in a vain attempt to save his life. The funeral service Sunday afternoon attracted one of the largest crowds that has gathered for a similar occasion here in recent years. Mr. Novak was born Sept. 7, 1856, in Bohemia. He came alone to America at the age of 19, locating immediately in the Clutier community, where he had friends. His parents, Vencil and Anna Novak, followed him here some years later and both died and are buried in Oneida township. Mr. Novak was married in September, 1883, to Anna Hach, who survives. The couple farmed in Oneida and Clark townships until about eighteen years ago, when they retired and moved to Clutier. Three children were born, all of whom are living. They are Joseph P. Novak, local banker; Miss Julia Novak, of Chicago; and Louis J., on one of the home farms in Clark township. Although a sufferer for several years from gall bladder trouble, Mr. Novak always enjoyed fair health until a few days before his death. On Monday of last week he was taken ill with intestinal influenza, but his condition was not considered serious until Wednesday, when an obstruction of the bowels developed. For nearly two days he suffered intense pain and attending physicians announced that the only slight hope of saving his life lay in an operation. He was rushed to a Waterloo hospital Thursday afternoon and was operated upon immediately but died at 6:10 p.m. without regaining consciousness. Mr. Novak was a member for more than twenty years of the Z.C.B.J. order and the funeral was conducted in the lodge hall here at 1:30 pm Sunday by S. V. Shonka, speaker, of Cedar Rapids. Several hundred persons packed the building to pay their last respects to the decedent. Following the service the body was taken to Cedar Rapids for cremation, as had been Mr. Novak’s wish. Mr. Novak was one of a family of three children, both others of whom still survive. Mrs. Vince Kosnar, the only sister, lives east of Clutier; while the brother, Vencil Novak, is a resident of Scotland, S.D. The latter,together with a daughter, Mrs. Frank Hora, was here Sunday for the funeral.
