July 24, 1901 Pg. 5 Col. 4 AN OLD CITIZEN DEAD From Saturday's Daily, Yesterday morning the angel of death again visited our city, and removed from his sufferings, Joseph R. Dole, one of the oldest and best known citizens of the county. He was a landmark in the north part of Fairfield township for many years, having moved there in 1863. He was associated with such men as Daniel Rider, John Murphy, Frank Meek, Patrick Kennedy, Peter Gow, Mat Junkin, Border Canaday (sic.) and Thomas Moorman, all of whom have already passed away into that other world. His death removes from our midst the last of the early settlers and pioneers who have made that part of Jefferson county so well and favorably known. He was a hard working man in every respect. He was always active in all school and church work. He was especially anxious that all the children in his neighborhood should have a good education. He was not a finely educated man, having received only a common school education, and for that reason he was more clearly the advantage to be gained from being an educated man. He was always very desirous that his children should have the advantages, of which he had been deprived and so they were well educated, two of them Frank W. and J. Wilber being graduated from Parsons college of this city. He was a thoroughly honest man, a good citizen in every way and a public spirited person. He was never too busy to serve his county in any way. He was not a man who pushed himself into prominent places, but whenever he was given any work to do, he accepted the position and did everything carefully thoroughly, the helpfulness and liberty will be greatly missed by the church. His death has removed from amoung us one who was a thoroughly good and honest man and one who was loved and respected by all who knew hims. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his family have the heartfelt sympathy of a large number of friends. Joseph R. Dole was born December 20, 1824, in Rush county, Indiana. While still a child his parents removed to Clarmont county, Ohio, where he grew to young manhood. June 17, 1849, he was married to Marie E. Armacost. In 1851, he came to this county, locating on the William Alston farm, west of Fairfield. After living there for twelve months purchased the farm northwest of this city, wherre he resided until the fall of 1898, when he removed to this city, purchasing the Burns property at 51 East Stone street. The rest of his life has been spent there. December 3, 1897, he was injured in a runaway and it was from the effects of this injury that he died. He has been gradually failing since his injury and he has been perfectly helpless for the past six months. There were five children born to him and his wife: Charles A. of Salt Lake City, Utah; John T. and Frank W. of Akron, Colorado; J. Wilbur and Eva of this city. He has been married fifty-two years and there has never been a death in the family before. He was a member of the Methodist church. The funeral was held this afternoon at his late residence at two oclock. Rev. F. O. Kemble of the Methodist church conducted the services.
