He came to the United States with his parents when he was eight years old. The family which consisted of five children, stopped at Cedar Rapids but soon took over a small acreage near Ely, Iowa. They lived in Linn County several years, then moved to a farm northwest of Clutier. Other children were Frank, Anna, Mary and John. Joe helped his father on the farm until his marriage to Mary Kvidera, whose parents were early Vining settlers. For several years they farmed in Crystal and Grant Townships, then left Tama County for ten years to benefit Mrs. Vorba's health. They operated a farm in Woodbury County where a Kvidera family lived near Anthon. Upon their return, they bought a farm southeast of Lincoln in Grant Township where they lived about fifteen years. In 1919, the family now consisting of a daughter, Eleanor and son, Adolph, moved to Traer where Mr. Vorba engaged in real estate, insurance and the lightning rod business. For seventeen years he served as sexton and committeeman of St. Paul Catholic Church too. The Vorbas celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1934. Couple Here Honored by Children on 50th Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vorba Sr., of Traer, quietly passed their golden wedding anniversary last Saturday. The only special observance of the day was a family party in the evening. Their four married children and the members of their families surprised the couple about 8 o clock Saturday night, bringing a basket supper and spending the evening under the parental roof. The company numbered about twenty. Mr. and Mrs. Vorba have spent most of their lives in Tama county. They were married at Chelsea April 14, 1884, and forty of the fifty years of their married life has been spent in and near Traer. Both are natives of Bohemia, but came to America with their parents at an early age. Mr. Vorba was 73 years old on March 24 last. His parents and five children came from the old country when Joe was 8 years old, the family stopping first in Cedar Rapids, but soon taking over a small acreage near Ely, Ia. They lived in Linn county several years, then moved to Tama county onto the Arter farm, northwest of Clutier. Joe helped his father on the farm until his marriage. Mrs. Vorba, who is 69, was Mary Kvidera before her marriage, born in June, 1864, coming with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kvidera, to America when she was a young girl. Her parents were early settlers of the Vining neighborhood. She was reared on a farm northwest of Vining and lived there until her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Vorba began farming an eighty acre farm six miles south of Traer after their marriage, their home for two years. For several years they farmed in Crystal and Grant townships. Then they left Tama county for ten years, operating a farm near Anthon, Woodbury county. On their return they bought the John Kline farm, southeast of Lincoln, in Grant township, where they lived about fifteen years. Fourteen years ago they moved to Traer, Mr. Vorba being active in the real estate, insurance and lightning rod business. The couple have been the parents of seven children, six of whom are living: Joe M. Vorba, southeast of Traer, Mrs. Peter B. Caslavka and Mrs. Vince Caslavka, both of the Clutier vicinity; A. F. Vorba, of Traer; Eleanor, who is employed at Saginaw, Mich., by a New York firm operating a chain of ladies ready-to-wear apparel stores; and Adolph, who has been a teacher several years at New London, Wis. A daughter died at the age of 4. Mr. Vorba has one brother, Frank, of Traer, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Stepanek, of Traer, and Mrs. Mary Preborsky Lapour, of Marshalltown. Mrs. Vorba has two brothers and two sisters in this country - Mike and Louis Kvidera, Toledo, and Frank who makes his home with the Joe Nachazel family, near Traer; Mrs. Barbara Skrable and Mrs. Rose Valenta, both of Elberon.
