Born June 12, 1935, in Ridgely, he was the son of the late Alexander and Elizabeth Kohn Helmer. After graduating from Easton High School he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Read More	Cordova -- Joseph William Helmer of Cordova, died after a brief illness Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was 73. Born June 12, 1935, in Ridgely, he was the son of the late Alexander and Elizabeth Kohn Helmer. After graduating from Easton High School he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Following his release from active duty, he returned to Talbot County, where he worked at various jobs. Later he owned and operated P.J. Distributors, a wholesale bakery business. After the sale of the business, he formed "The Dog Patch Pet Taxi Service" covering the Mid-Shore and surrounding areas. Mr. Helmer or Joe, as he was known by all, was a 55-year life member of the Cordova Fireman's Association, where he had served in all phases of the line officers, including past chief, engineer and was one of the first honorary members of the Ladies Auxiliary. He also was a member of the Talbot Kennel Club, and a long time volunteer for Meals on Wheels of Caroline County. Joe was known for his quick wit and friendly smile by all who knew him! He is survived by his wife, the former Pamela S. Davis; two sons, Grant E. Helmer and Kyle D. Helmer and his wife Shannan, all of Cordova; a brother, Alexander Helmer of Federalsburg; a sister, Margaret Edmunds of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and four grandchildren, Zachary, Logan, J. Kylie and Chace. A memorial service with fire department honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Christ Episcopal Church, Easton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home P.A., Easton. Burial will be in St Joseph's Cemetery, Cordova.
