Description	:	Boone County Democrat September 7, 1906 Joseph York, the well-known pioneer coal operator of Boone County, died at his home in Zenorville Monday evening at the age of about eighty years. Death is supposed to be due to heart failure brought on by his advanced age. Mr. York was born in England, but came to this country when a young man. He was one of the first men to develop the coal industry in this section, being engaged in that business more than thirty years ago. At one time he had some valuable mines there and did a thriving business. He was ever honest and courteous in his dealings with the public and won the esteem of all. We have not been able to learn the particulars of his death or of the funeral. ****** Hello, As a 53 year family genealogist and historian of the various York families in America I have attempted to trace the English ancestors of all York families in America. Seeking the ancestors of Joseph York has revealed some interesting information. The 1851 Census of England, Wednesbury, Staffordshire (pages 392 & 393) lists Joseph York with his parents and 5 of 7 brothers and sisters. Joseph York is the son John York(e) (1800 Madley, Shropshire, England - July 1874 Madley, Shropshire, England) and his wife Isabella Hartshorne (March 1797 Brierleehill, Staffordshire, England - October 1851 West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England). John York and Isabella Hartshorne were married on 7 Dec 1823 in Kingswinford, Stafford, England. The seven children were George York b. 1835, coal miner, Isaiah York, b. 1834, coal miner, Emma York, b. 1839, John York, b. 1833, Joseph York, b. 1831, coal miner, Levi York, b. 1841, and Pamela York, b. 1826. It is revealing that his father John York(e) and three of his younger brothers were coal miners. Joseph York married Jemima Bailey Farrin on Jan 1854 in Staffordshire, England. They started a large family before immigrating to America in 1878 all the way to Boone County, Iowa to begin Coal mining again at age 48. It would be an interesting story to learn what convinced Joseph York to immigrate into Boone County, Iowa in America with a large family most of whom were born in Staffordshire, England.
