PERKINS Memorial Biographical Record Fillmore County and others 1899 The Hon. J.M. Perkins, son of Joshua and Rebecca Perkins, was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, October 3, 1828. On coming west in 1873, he located in Grundy County, Illinois, where he purchased a farm and turned his attention to agriculture pursuits. He made his home there until 1882, when he bought a farm in West Blue Township and became a resident of Fillmore County. On December 26, 1882, Mr. Perkins was united in marriage with Miss Mary Blake, a native of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. In 1888, he was elected supervisor of West Blue Township and served in this office for seven years. Mr. and Mrs. Perkins had 11 children; George A., Harvey G., Charles W., John A., Edward D., Alexander R., and Frank B. Perkins and four daughters. The following was contributed by Kathy S.: The following was extracted from the Sept. 16, 1909, McCook Tribune, ks: Died Full of Years. Sunday a week, Mrs. and Mrs. Ed. D. Perkins were called to Fairmont by the illness of his aged father. The father died on last Friday, and on Sunday was buried at Fairmont. Father Perkins was 81 years of age at this death. He assisted in the organization of Fillmore county, represented that county in the lower branch of the legislature, and in general was always identified with the best interests of Fillmore county and of his home town. He was buried under Masonic Auspices, his funeral being very largely attended. Mrs. and Mrs. Perkins returned home, Tuesday, on No. 1. All six of the surviving sons were present at the funeral. ALSO: The Geneva Gazette 16 Sept. 1909 Front page: Hon. J. M. Perkins of West Blue Township died at his home Friday, September 10, 1909, aged eighty years and eleven months, having been born October 3, 1828. The funeral services were held Sunday and were participated in by many of his old neighbors who came to pay homage to one of Fillmore County's respresentative citizens who was called to his reward. The services at the home were held at 10:00 o'clock and then the remains were taken to Fairmont where in the Methodist church, of which he was a member, the funeral services were publicly held, Rev. Gallagher and Rev. Brooks conducting the services. Just outside the city of Fairmont the concourse was met by the Masonic fraternity of Fairmont, with large delegations from Geneva, Grafton and Exeter, and they conducted the last sad rites, according to their ritual, at the grave. J. M. Perkins was a prominent figure in Fillmore County's advancement and her history will be incomplete without the record of his share. Coming here in 1882, he purchased the farm in West Blue Township which he resided on when death claimed him. He greatly improved this place and reared a large family who in turn are doing their share in serving their country. Mr. Perkins was born in Bloody Run, near the town of Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, October 3, 1828. He was reared and educated in the same manner as farmer boys of that day were and after schooling himself learned the iron molding business. He started west in 1873 and located in Grundy County, Illinois, where he purchased a farm and devoted his time to agriculture until 1882 when he came west to Nebraska and settled in Fillmore County. He had been married in Pennsylvania December 26, 1852, to Miss Mary Blake a native of Huntington County, that state. To them were born eleven children; George A., Harry G., deceased; Chas. W., John A., Edward D., Alexander R., Frank B., and four daughters all of whom are dead, three dying in Pennsylvania and one in Nebraska. Religiously, Mr. Perkins was a Methodist and joined that church in 1852. He has been a faithful worker ever since. After coming to Nebraska he allied himself with the congregation in Fairmont and has held at various times all the offices within the giving of the congregation. He has served as an exhorter and local preacher at times. Politically he had allied himself with the Republican Party since its formation and in Fillmore County he had been honored with several offices. He has at various times been a member of the county board of supervisors and at the time the present courthouse was dedicated, Feb. 22, 1894, he was chairman of that body. He served the county in the legislature of the state, being elected as representative in 1895. West Blue township was always on the map during the lifetime of J. M. Perkins and his work will live after him in this region.
