JOSIAH EMMERT, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, DIES Josiah Emmert, who has been ill for many months, died at his home in Jewell on Wednesday, July 20, 1932. Mr. Emmert has long been a resident of this town and was one of its honored Civil War veteran. Everyone who has lived in Jewell for the past half century knew Mr. Emmert and respected him as an upright citizen and friendly acquaintance. For many years he engaged in business here. Mr. Emmert was born in Pennsylvania, Sept. 28, 1843. In February, 1864, he volunteered for service in Company B, 11th Pennsylvania regiment. He was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness. He received medical treatment at Fredricksburg and Washington, D.C. On Jan. 8, 1865, he was discharged from the service for disability. He was married to Elizabeth Elta Mizener at Salona, Pa., on December 31, 1867. They moved from Pennsylvania to Kansas on March 11, 1878. Mrs. Emmert survives her husband as does a sons and several daughters. A complete biography will be published next week. The funeral service will be held Friday morning at the home. JEWELL COUNTY REPUBLICAN, JULY 29, 1932, page:4 OBITUARY --- JOSIAH EMMERT On Wednesday afternoon, July 20, 1932, Josiah Emmert passed away at his home where he had been tenderly cared for during his last illness. He had not been well since July 8, 1927, at which time he fell from a tree March 31, 1928, he had a stroke, but recovered sufficiently to be up, and enjoy the friends who called. Mr. Emmert was born in Northumberland county, Pa., on Sept. 28, 1843. At the time of his death he was 88 years, 9 months, and 22 days. He was married to Elizabeth Etta Mizener Dec. 31, 1867, at Salona, Pa., where they lived for 11 years. They moved to Jewell in March, 1878. Mr. Emmert is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Emmert, and a granddaughter, Violet Dabinnus, of the home; his son and daughters;Art Emmert. pf Randall, Kans.; Katie Henninger, of Jewell, Kans.; Minnie Jewell, of Fort Dodge, Ia.; Ruth Chilcott, of Boulder, Colo.; Lena Lamb, of El Modena, Calif.; Annie McCoy, of Four Lakes, Wash.; also by 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Mr. Emmert was one of nine children, only one of whom remains, Thomas Emmert, of Loganton, Pa. He was a member of an Evangelical church in Pennsylvania, and later a member of the Evangelical church of Jewell. He met and faced bravely the trying experiences of the Civil War and of pioneer life. His noble traits of character are known and appreciated most by the immediate family circle. Out-of-town relatives present at the funeral were: Art Emmert and family, Randall, Kans.; M. Braddock, Mankato, Kans.; Mrs. Carrie Hanawalt, Colorado Springs, Colo.
