Katie Ellen Emmert was born September 14, 1872 in Loganton, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. She died unexpectedly Saturday morning, October 21, at the Riley County Hospital in Manhattan, Kans., at the age of 89. Her parents were Josiah and Elizabeth Mizner Emmert. In March 1878, the family moved from Pennsylvania to Jewell, Kans., where she received her education and grew to womanhood. At the age 12, she was baptized by the Rev. H. J. Bowman of the Evangelical Conference from Cleveland, Ohio. October 28, 1892 she was married to Winfield Scott Henninger whose family had also come from Pennsylvania to Jewell in 1877, one year prior to the coming of her family. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1942. Mr. Henninger died August 28, 1945. They were the parts of six children three of whom survive her. A son John Winfield and a daughter, Clara Ellen died in infancy. Another daughter, Mrs. Emma f. Hofer, died July 22, 1950. The surviving children are Carl M. of W. Covina, Calif., Betty of Topeka and R. Berg of Kansas City, MO. Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Minnie D. Jewell of Kansas City, MO., and Mrs. Lena Lamb of Santa Ana, Calif., one brother Arthur Emmert of Mankato, Kans., four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Henninger moved to Topeka in 1950 living in the home of her son Berg until October 1952 when she moved into the home of her daughter Betty. Here she enjoyed the relationship of love and association with friends and relatives for several years. In August 1961, when it was imperative that other arrangements be made to care for Mrs. Henninger, she moved to Manhattan, Kans., into the home maintained by the Kansas Rebekah-Odd Fellows lodge in Jewell and Mrs. Henninger had been a member of the Jewell Rebekah lodge for nearly 69 years. Mrs. Henninger was a member of the Jewell Evangelical United Brethren church, Port Chapter No. 55 of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary unit 72 and of the Jewell Rebekah Lodge No. 35. If Mrs. Henninger had a hobby, it would have been people. She liked to visit with them whether they were children, young people or people her own age. She enjoyed going to church as long as her health permitted and was active in lodge and community affairs as long as was able. She like to read and enjoyed watching television programs. She liked to be out-of-doors and took interest in her plants and flowers as long as she could. Her life has been active, full, and busy. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Evangelical United Brethren church. The Rev. Merton Zeisset conducted the service. Music was by Mrs. Emerson, Worick, organist, Mrs. H.H. Bussell who sang. Pallvearers were Ralph Arasmith, Bert Varney, Birt Saint, Warren Oplinger, Lester Ayers, and Ferd Kemmerer. The Van Sickel Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in the Wallace cemetery. Those here form out of town to attend the services were: Miss Betty Henninger, Topeka; Berg Henninger, Kansas City, MO.; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Emmert, Mankato; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred J. Sharp, Clearmont, Mo.; Armand Hofer, Pittsburg, Kans.; Mrs. Thelma Stumbo, Kansas City, MO.; Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Shamburg, Scottsville; Mr. and Mrs. Joyce Johnson, Scanndia; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle W. Stambaugh, Russell, Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Ives, Topeka, and Mrs. E. S. Sheldon, Ottawa.
