Alvin adopted Judy, and her name was changed to Judy JoAnn Rapp. She was well-loved by her daddy. Judy was mother's best helper for her younger siblings who were born to Alvin and Betty. She worked at Lark's horse camp in Boone. Judy babysat for area families, worked on the farm as a young girl and was a member of Dawson Wide-Awakes 4-H Club. She joined the Paton Presbyterian Church in 1949, but later the family attended Salem United Methodist Church in Paton. Judy graduated in 1961 from Paton Consolidated Schools, one of the last classes to graduate from Paton before the district merged with Churdan. After graduating, she attended beauty school in Fort Dodge. Though she did not practice in a salon, she often did hair for family and friends. She married James Donald Bass on December 6, 1964 at Salem United Methodist Church in Paton, Iowa. They adopted an infant who was born on Nov. 6, 1970 and named him John James Bass. Judy loved raising her little boy and was so proud of his many accomplishments. Judy worked at Sunset Motel and Trailer Park in Fort Dodge, had daycare in her home, managed Lakota Girl Scout Camp in Dayton, was activities director at the Dayton Care Facility and worked at a restaurant in Dayton. She was a devoted wife and mother who attended all of her son's ballgames, etc. She was a doting grandmother and loving daughter, sister, granddaughter and niece. Judy later became the mother-in-law to Sue Jacobsen Bass and the grandmother of Kylie Bass and Zachary Bass. Judy was a member of Dayton Methodist Church. She was an excellent artist, once drawing a complete desert scene with charcoal on her pink bedroom walls. Judy loved to talk, Elvis, listening to records, Blackjack Gum, the color red, horses and Coca-Cola. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She had many friends. She became severely ill and was hospitalized at Mary Greeley in Ames for several months. She was transferred to the Polk City Care Center in Polk City where she died less than a day later.
