Karen (pronounced Kern) was reared on a farm near Vejle, Denmark, where her father worked as a tenant farmer. They were very poor and worked very hard. The children attended school and catechism classes. As they grew older, they worked for other families. Karen worked one entire year for $25. In 1877, she came to America with a group of immigrants, among whom was her future husband's brother, Frederick Beck. She recalled that the trip was a happy one with the young people dancing on the deck in the evenings. She landed in New York, and went to Solomon KS by train where she was met by Hans, who had acquired in addition to the farm, a team and lumber wagon, in which they made the trip to Beloit, KS. It was the Spring of the year and many of the streams were flooded and had to be forded, a very frightening experience for Karen. Their first home on the farm was a log house with a dirt roof. Once when Mattie was a baby, as she lay sleeping on the bed, Karen saw a snake hanging down from the dirt roof, directly over the baby. She snatched the baby up just as the snake fell. They lived here for nine years and six of their children were born on this farm. Karen had a spinning wheel, carded her wool, spun it into yarn and knitted stockings, underwear, gloves, and caps for her family. She sewed for six children by hand, before acquiring a sewing machine. As the children studied their lessons at home, Karen also studied the English language with them, learning to speak and write well. Sometimes she would read stories aloud, both in Danish and English. At twilight, as they waited for Hans to come in from doing chores, Karen and the children would sit around the stove which opened up so the light from the fire could light the room, as lamps were frugally not lit until needed. Then she would sing songs she had known in Denmark or recount stories of the "old country". Sometimes a bit of horehound candy would be divided among them; no other kind of "store" candy was known to them. --- Spouse: Hans Frederick Beck; married June 23, 1877 in Beloit, Cloud county, KS.
