Samuels, August 8, 1961 Serena (Rena) Beck was born April 15, 1888, the eighth child of Hans and Karen Peterson Beck in Cloud County, five miles south of Simpson, KS. She attended Columbia school where among her schoolmates was her future husband, Fredrick Wallace Chapman. Children today would probably think their childhood was very dull without all the entertainment of today, but with ten children in the Chapman family and eight in the Beck family, there was never a dull moment. Rena well remembers when she was a child of four years, she was playing on the porch, and somehow in going backwards, she fell into a pail of slop. Naturally she thought she was nearly killed and screamed "bloody murder" but dear old mother always knew just what to do in all emergencies and soon had her scrubbed and into clean clothes, none the worse for her encounter with "ye old swill pail," and after thinking she was so close to death's door. Fredrick Wallace Chapman was born September 8, 1884, six miles southwest of Glasco, KS to Fred and Mary Kimble Chapman. Fred also says he remembers when he was a young boy he was sent to the pasture some distance from the house after the cows and did not notice his small brother, Dan, following him. When it came suppertime and no one could find Dan, the family and neighbors helped in the hunt for Dan. He was found a mile from home in a neighbor's corn field. Fred's father took a line of harness and gave Fred a whipping he didn't deserve as he didn't know Dan was following him (wonder if such treatment wouldn't improve some of the children of today). Rena and her sister, Emma, were inseparable companions throughout their childhood and school days. On September 24, 1907, Fred and Rena and Emma and Tom Griffin were married in a double wedding ceremony at the Courthouse in Beloit by Probate Judge Cooper. After the ceremony, the brides' mother and sister, Mrs. Frank Chapman, served an elaborate wedding supper at the Beck home. Later in the evening the neighbors all gathered for an old fashioned charivari and after the usual treats, the neighbors left, wishing them a long and happy wedded life, which wish came true as they lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding in 1957. Fred and Rena's first home was one-half mile east of Columbia schoolhouse, and the same home where her sister, Anna and Frank started housekeeping. It was on this place that Glen Rexford Chapman was born February 28, 1908. When Glen was a child, there was nothing he enjoyed more than to have his Grandpa Beck tell of his childhood in Denmark - of the food they ate, the wooden shoes and the clothes they wore, and the great difference in the way the work was done in that country. Dale H. Chapman was born November 1, 1911 in Mitchell County on the place known then as the Lee Child's place. It would well have been called the rattlesnake farm, as Fred killed forty-five rattlesnakes during one summer. In 1924, the family went to CA., taking twelve days to make the trip in a new Model A Ford car. They took time to see the Grand Canyon, the painted desert, the petrified forest, and the cliff dwellers. They had intended to make CA their home, but on January 22, 1925, Glenn was stricken with ruptured appendicitis and on January 29th, he passed away. They then returned to KS bringing the body back to be buried in the Glasco Cemetery. They took up farming again as their occupation and lived on several different farms, all in the Glasco/Simpson, KS vicinity. In May, 1959, they moved to their own home in Simpson, and in 1960 they returned from farming after 53 years of farm work. ---
