She and her younger sister, Rena, were constant companions and playmates. They attended Columbia School, where among their schoolmates were their future husbands, Fred Chapman and Tom Griffin. Although the Beck Family had to work very hard and live frugally, they had many pleasures, attending dances and "socials." Emma liked to draw and art class was one of her favorite classes at school. She also excelled in "ciphering." She was not able to complete the eighth grade because she was needed to help with the farm work the spring that she would have taken the county examinations. She enjoyed working out of doors, driving a cultivator and a team of horses. She was a good hand with horses. Tom and Emma were married at Beloit, KS on September 24, 1907, in a double wedding ceremony with Fred and Rena Beck Chapman. Their first home was in Barnard where they lived for one year, moving to Minneapolis, KS for one year. Tom worked long hours, doing buying, butchering, and working in the shop. Emma continued to do the handiwork she had learned as a girl - crocheting, embroidering, painting, and piecing quilts. They moved to a farm near Simpson in 1910. In 1911, they bought a farm 3.5 miles south of Simpson from John Talg. This was an orchard farm, and the first few years were filled with hard work, as they put the farmland into cultivation and sold fruit from the orchards. The trees were old, however, and gradually died out. In 1920, Tom rented river land owned by Shanks brothers, which he farmed until he retired in 1956. This meant a 3 mile drive every morning and evening with horses or mules to cultivate and harvest the crops. Tom and Emma were married fourteen years before Faye was born, but their home was always open to nieces and nephews, younger brothers and sisters. Faye Avanel was born August 21, 1921 at the farm home. Nellie Boyle was her nurse; she was also the nurse when Tom was born. Emma always sang as she did her housework, tended her garden and chickens, and cared for her family. Her love of music lead her to study and master the organ after moving to the farm, practicing in the hot summer afternoons when she had a few minutes from her duties. She was one of the first to raise purebred chickens and she took a lot of pride in her nice yellow hens - Buff Orphingtons. She usually had about 300 laying hens and sold eggs to the hatcheries. A new home was built in 1925 by their nephew, Joe Prickett. Their enjoyment in their home and farm continued throughout the years, culminating in their Golden Wedding celebration at their home September 24, 1957 with Fred and Rena Beck Chapman. They were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Glasco, KS. Emma passed away March 7, 1958. ---
