Description	:	Kenneth Dwight Copeland was born April 18, 1923 at Harlan, Iowa to Dwight and Rosetta Davison Copeland. The family moved to several different locations when Kenneth was a young lad due to the health of his father. Read More	Kenneth Dwight Copeland was born April 18, 1923 at Harlan, Iowa to Dwight and Rosetta Davison Copeland. The family moved to several different locations when Kenneth was a young lad due to the health of his father. Kenneth was 7 years old when his father died and he and his and brother Wayne returned to Harlan where he completed his schooling. Kenneth began driving a truck as a young man until he enlisted in military service during World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps for 30 months in England and when he was discharged he returned to Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1952 Kenneth was involved in an accident which left him paralzyed from the waist down and after a year in Hines VA Hospital in Chicago, he was in a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. This required a change of careers and Kenneth began working for the Sherriff's office in Douglas County, Nebraska as an identification officer. He married Evelyn Polley Menard August 28, 1968 at Elk Point, South Dakota, and they lived at that time at Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska. In early 1970s Kenneth took a position as a staff instructor at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Center in Grand Island and the couple moved there until his retirement in 1980. Kenneth and Evelyn found a place to live in Keya Paha County, which was close to where his grandfather had settled in the early days of that county. They established their retirement home in Mills community where Kenneth set up a fix-it shop. He became a handy-man for the neighbors. He enjoyed being able to fish and hunt. He would drive his hand-controlled car or three-wheeler over the countryside. Several times his wheelchair would get into his fishing waters and he would have to be rescued. Kenneth was baptized at and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Burton and was faithful in service to that congregation. For the past four years Kenneth has been successfully battling cancer, but the past three months his health declined. He died October 27, 1998 at the age of 75. He was proceded in death by his parents and his brother Wayne. Surviving him are his wife Evelyn of Mills, NE; stepsons: Kenneth Menard and his wife Gaile of Grand Island,NE; Keith Menard and friend Shirley Regan of Grand Island, NE; grandson Trevor Ray Anderson and wife Jodi of Wood River, NE; and granddaughter Kelsey Lee Menard of Tecumeseh, NE Also surviving are a nephew Michael Copeland and wife Elaine of Leander, TX and their four children: Jessica, Steven, Brandon, and Nancy Jo; a niece Christine Copeland Moore and husband Roger and their four children: Heather, and Rrick Eastling and Lorelei and Michael Moore of Northwood, NE. Services Sunday, November 1, 1998 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Burton, Nebraska. Military Honors provided by the Springview American Legion Post #98 and the Naper VFW. Interment in the Olive Branch Cemetery in Mills, Nebraska.
