Read More	HOFFERBER, KENNETH RAYMOND—Kenneth Raymond Hofferber was born near Belvidere on June 26, 1925. He passed away in Geneva on September 11, 2007. In between were 82 years of hard work, service to country and community and a lot of fun with family and friends. When Kenny was ten, he moved to a farm near Geneva with his parents, Fred and Ella, sister, Ardeen and brothers, Loren, Marvin and Bob. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1943 and joined the Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Military service was made more tolerable by being stationed in Long Beach with high school classmate, Vaughn Fulton. After being released from the Navy in 1946, he worked in Denver for a year where his sister, Ardeen was living. After returning to Geneva, where he farmed with his family and worked at The Girls’ Training School, he met Helen Nichols, whom he married on December 4, 1952. Marrying Helen Nichols made Kenny an instant father to her four children, Barbara, Harry, Maury and Bob. The addition of John and Steve in the next few years completed the family. After farming for several years near Fairmont and Shickley, he went to work for the ASCS office, giving him the opportunity to become acquainted with farmers around the country. From then on, it was impossible to go ANYWHERE in the county with him without running into people he knew—he truly never knew a stranger and usually found something in common with anyone he met after a few minutes of conversation. In 1975, Kenny and Helen returned to Geneva, where they remained the rest of their lives. Retirement years included many good times with famiy and friends; playing golf and cards, eating out, traveling, volunteering and, most importantly, spending time with his 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He especially enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends when he and wife Helen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and again two years later when he celebrated his 80th birthday. Volunteering was especially important to Ken. He served on the Fillmore County Fair Board, the Geneva Senior Center commission, the Geneva Cemetery Association and various church groups. He was always among the first to volunteer when someone needed help. He also had a great love of kids. If there was a baby in the room, you’d soon find it on Kenny’s lap, learning an important life-skill like pat-a-cake. If they were a little older, you’d find Kenny on the floor playing with them. During the past year, he combined his care for kids and his desire to give back to his community by working with the Foster Grandparent program at the Youth Development Center. Kenneth is preceded in death by his wife, Helen; parents, Fred and Ella Hofferber, sister, Ardeen; brothers, Loren, Marvin and Bob; step-daughter, Barbara Becker and step-son, Robert Crawford and his wife, Anne. Kenneth is survived by sons, John, Steve, Harry Hofferber and Maury Crawford, daughter-in-law, Yasuko Crawford; brother-in-law, Ray Gough; sisters-in-law, Margie Hofferber and Della Hofferber; Merna Hofferber, Audrey Nichols and Maxine Nichols; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins, and of course, his many friends. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva September 14, with the Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied Ray Nichols who sang “Hymn of Promise” and “Thy Will Be Done.” Casket bearers were Bill, Tom and Chris Becker, Brian Crawford, Sherri Jeffrey, Kelly Winnik, Tim Jeffrey and Kevin Winnik. Honorary bearers were Vaughn Fulton, John Goodrich, Dale Johnson, Lyle Wagers, Carl Conley, Dr. Charles Ashby, Ben Fussell, Gary Whiteley and Claiton Lauber. Military graveside services were conducted by Sloan-Bolton American Legion Post 68 at the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal October 3rd, 2007 page 4.
