The Rev. Gregory Hanneman officiated. Lafe Bahnsen died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Anamosa Community hospital. He was born the son of Ted and Laura Schumann Bahnsen and moved to Owatonna, Minn. with his parents where he grew up and was educated. As a young man he worked in an Owatonna canning factory before moving to Wyoming where he worked until entering the Army in 1943. On April 24, 1940 he married Luella Pankow at Wyoming. She died in 1985. After his discharge from service in 1945, Lafe returned to Wyoming where he started a trucking business that he operated until 1957. He drove truck for Donald Buchholtz and then Wayne Bahnsen Truck Line in Oxford Junction for a few years and then worked at Hurst Produce in Monmouth, Iowa for two years. In the early 60s, Lafe began working for Big Bill's Feed and Fertilizer in Onslow and Wyoming until joining DeKalb Feeds when they purchased the feed business in 1978. He retired in 1980. He also served many years as the Zion Lutheran Church custodian. Lafayette Bahnsen and Alice Holtz were married on November 12, 1988 at Wyoming. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the church Brotherhood, and the American Legion Wyoming Post #259. Survivors include his wife; three sons; Laurel of Wyoming, Louis of Marion, and Laverne of Center Point; a daughter, Mrs. Allan (Luane) Heitshusen of South Amana; a stepson, Richard Holtz of Bettendorf; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernelta Harris of Cedar Rapids, Eva Hammond of Davenport, and Mrs. John (Betty) Wurst of Onslow; and two brothers, Jay of Davenport and John of Anamosa. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife. Hayden Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
