Description	:	Larkin Culberson York, Sr. was the first born son of eleven children of Nathaniel York and Mary Anne Culberson. He was also known as Larkin "Charlie" York, Sr. He married 21 year old Sophia "Tilly" Kivett 4 Feb 1823 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Read More	Larkin Culberson York, Sr. was the first born son of eleven children of Nathaniel York and Mary Anne Culberson. He was also known as Larkin "Charlie" York, Sr. He married 21 year old Sophia "Tilly" Kivett 4 Feb 1823 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Sophia was a neighbor and the daughter of John Matthew Kivett and his wife Rosannah Aldridge. They lived in a log cabin in the wooded north eastern section of Columbia Township of Randolph County, North Carolina southwest of Liberty. Twenty one years after marriage unfortunately something very tragic occurred with Larkin. This occurred during the time frame when his wife was pregnant with their tenth child. Perhaps Larkin had a hunting or farm accident or a fight that caused his death prematurely at age 47 when his large family needed him most. Larkin died on 10 March 1844. He was carried south west several miles to be buried in his father's private York Family Cemetery on the east side of Reed Creek. His father had died seven years earlier but his mother was still living to grieve his early death. Larkin's last child was born nine months after his death on 30 December 1844. The only child Larkin did not see was named in his honor as Larkin Culberson "Charlie" York, Jr. It is interesting to note that Larkin's first born son William Yancy York had been involved in troublesome activities with three different women about the time of his father's death. There is no doubt this caused many family conflicts and the short 31 years of life for William Yancy. It is not clear if these relationships of William Yancy were the results of the grief and lost of his father Larkin or conflicts over other life style issues. He may have had mental torment for some involvement in a hunting or farm accident that caused his fathers death. It is so sad to observe the disruption and hurt that came into this family after Larkin's death. Widow Sophia really needed help to raise her very large family of ten children. Three years later Sophia married a second time on 20 February 1847 to a much younger Pinkney Davenport. Pinkney was born in the Tabernacle section of north western Randolph County. He was the third child of six children born to Joel Davenport and his wife Sarah Boyd. Pinkney was very active in local Politics as the Chairman of the Democratic Party in Randolph County. Significantly Pinkney had been licensed as a government approved distiller of liquid spirits for his occupation. With six boys in his new family Pinkney obviously had young men to teach and learn to help in his distillery business. This new business most likely provided for a lot of quick financial needs of this large family that he undertook to support. Most likely this is how these folks were often referred to as the "Bootlegging York's". One of the grandsons was used by Hollywood to setup the liqueur still for the Dick Clark movie "Killer's Three". It was a "Bonnie and Clyde" style movie made in Ramseur, Grays Chapel and Franklinville in 1968 staring young Tony YORK with music by Merle Haggard. This entire Larkin York family were life time members of the Whites Chapel United Methodist Church where most of their members and descendants are buried. Pinkney and Sophia did not add any children to their very large family of ten existing children by her fist marriage. Larkin Culberson York, Sr. and his wife Sophia Kivett had ten children: 1.
