Payne, 92, Dead Mrs. Laura B. Payne, 92, Cherokee resident, died at 5 a.m. today at the Roeber rest home in Pittsburg after an illness of five years. She was the widow of George W. Payne. Mrs. Payne was born in Batavia, Ia., Jan. 14, 1867, and at the age of five moved to a farm northwest of Weir. She married George W. Payne in 1884 and the couple came to Cherokee. She had lived here since. Mr. Payne died here several years later. Memberships were held in the Presbyterian church here and the Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Payne was the last charter member of the Women's Literature club in Cherokee and also belonged to the Federated Women's club of Cherokee. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Nadene Castleberry, Oklahoma City; two sons, George W. Payne jr., San Bernardino, Calif., and Colonel Lawrence B. Payne, Camp Polk, La.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at the Cherokee Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Thursday, with Rev. C.J. Askins officiating.
