Leeper was dead. he had gone to his garage to do some work on his car. he had been there for some time, and the car was running. His wife went to see where he was and what he was doing. She found him lying on the running board with a screw driver in his hand, and it has been suggested that he was probably trying out his spark plugs, when overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning. Mrs. Leeper called Mrs. Calyton and John Dauron and they took him from the garage, which was said to be almost air tight. However he was too far gone for them to do him any good. It was a shocking affair. Mr. Leeper has lived in and near Cherokee almost all his life. He was born in Odessa, Mo., December 10, 1876, and moved to this vicinity in 1880. He was for many years watchman at old No. 10 Western coal mine. he worked at Hamilton No. 9 for a while, but for the past several years has not been employed. For a while he ran the pop corn and small confectionery stand just south of the Midland theatre in Pittsburg, but did not like inside work, and sold it. Memberships were held in the Methodist church, Masonic lodge and Chapter. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Clara R. Leeper; one daughter, Miss Helen Leeper, who is teaching in Windsor, Mo.; one brother, Dr. R.B. Leeper of Denver; four sisters, Mrs. Geo. W. Payne of this city, Mrs. Anna Murphy and Mrs. Joe Lambert of Pittsburg and Mrs. R.C. Strain of Big Springs, Texas. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Sam Hedrick in charge. Burial was in the Cherokee cemetery. The Masons gave their burial ceremony at the grave.
