CHILCOTT DIED SATURDAY Prominent Fairfield Woman Had Been Ill 5 Weeks; Funeral This Afternoon Mrs. Marshall Chilcott died Saturday evening at 7:15 o'clock at her home, 1001 East Broadway, after an illness of five weeks. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Methodist church in charge of Dr. C. L. Tennant assisted by Rev. George Minear a former pastor of Mrs. Chilcott. The body lay in state at the M. E. church from 12:30 o'clock until 2 o'clock, the W. C. T. U. acting as guard of honor. Interment was made in the Evergreen Cemetery. Laura Horton, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Samuel Horton, was born April 25, 1860, and was educated in the public schools of that place (sic. in Jefferson county, Iowa; likely but not certain to be in the city of Fairfield). She was married to Marshall Chilcott April 14, 1881, in which union was born one daughter Mrs. Vera Job of Maryville, Mo. Mrs. Chilcott was a strong temperance advocate and had been connected with the work all her life. She was connected with the W. C. T. U. for twenty-three years and joined the first union organized in Fairfield. She was state Sabbath school superintendent of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, president of the Jefferson County W. C. T. U. and district superintendent of the W. C. T. U. She has been 8 years superintendent of the city's poor and had endeared herself to scores of the poor of this place, being a friend indeed as well as in need. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church forty years ago and had always been an active worker in the church. Mrs. Chilcott was for many years superintendent of the primary work in the Sabbath school and won the hearts of the little ones. Besides the husband and daughter she leaves the following brothers and sisters: Henry and Will Horton of Glendale, Mrs. Clark Honts of Wesleyan Springs, North Dakota, and Mrs. I. H. Gossel (sic) of Evansville, Wis. Hundreds payed (sic) tribute to Mrs. Laura Chilcott this afternoon as her body lay in state at the Methodist church. ------------ Note: the first name of Laura's husband was "Marshall". It was inadvertently engraved as "Marshal" on the headstone inscription.
