Shannon and Laura Spencer Shannon. ----------------- Fairfield Tribune Dec. 21, 1904 Pg. 9 Col. 1 Death of Mrs. Shannon Laura Spencer was born Oct. 3, 1830, New York, where she lived until 1854, when she came to Fayette county, Iowa, with her parents. Feb. 12, 1859, she was married there to J. W. Shannon. In 1881 they went to Huron, S.D., to make their home and in 1897 (sic. 1899) Mr. Shannon died and Mrs. Shannon has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Fourt. December 12th she was stricken with pneumonia and despite the skill of physicians and trained nurses she died Sunday morning, Dec. 18, at 10 o'clock. Two children, Mrs. Frank Fourt and Edwin S. Shannon are left to mourn the loss of a gentle, loving mother. Mrs. Shannon was a devout Episcopalian. She was of a quiet, retiring disposition and to those who knew her best were the beauties of her character manifest. Although she has passed away, her memory will live in the hearts of those who are near and dear. The sympathy of many friends is with the family, whose Christmas joy has become a time of mourning. Funeral services were held at the Fourt home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. O. Spelman, and the remains laid away in Evergreen cemetery.
