Laurel Dean Stevicks was born to Lee Roy and Pearl (Dappen) Stevicks on February 13, 1938 in Burke, SD. He was the youngest of six children and the only child in the family born in a hospital. Laurel was happy in the fact that it was his mother who named him – because his father wanted to name him Grover Cleveland Alexander after the famous baseball pitcher. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Jamison, Nebraska. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school. Laurel was proud to have served in the Army National Guard from 1956-1959, and the Army Reserves from 1959-1964. He was married to Marian Lang from 1969-1971. Laurel farmed with his father south of Burke, SD and helped farm and ranch with other neighbors and family members. He was a caring and loving caregiver for his father. In 1992 Laurel moved to Huron, SD where he was employed for a few years with a dairy farmer . Laurel made many friends in Huron. One commented when hearing of Laurel's death that he was "a really nice man". He semi-retired but remained active in farming with his nephew, Tom Stevicks. While working with Tom and discussing the farm work needed done his motto was " lets get er done". Laurel's talent for working with machinery was exceptional. He could maintain and fix any farm implement when given the time and tools. His machinery operating skills were exceptional as he would never push equipment beyond its limits. He was still visiting and talking farming with his family the evening before his death on July 29, 2010 at the age of 72 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Melvin, a sister Maude and other close family members. Surviving him are his sisters: Eillean Ronfeldt of Lake Andes, SD; Iva King of Gayville, SD; Neoma (John) Holub of Burke, SD and a sister-in-law Mary Stevicks of Dallas, SD, and by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
