Description	:	Melvin Eugene Stevicks was born at Mullen, SD on Feb. 14, 1921, to Lee and Pearl (Dappen) Stevicks. He was raised in the Lucas area until 1940 when he went to CCC camp in Rapid City. He then went to Minnesota and worked until 1941 when he enlisted in the Navy. He served aboard the USS Scott, a troop transport, until it was sunk off the shores of North Africa in 1943. Read More	Melvin Eugene Stevicks was born at Mullen, SD on Feb. 14, 1921, to Lee and Pearl (Dappen) Stevicks. He was raised in the Lucas area until 1940 when he went to CCC camp in Rapid City. He then went to Minnesota and worked until 1941 when he enlisted in the Navy. He served aboard the USS Scott, a troop transport, until it was sunk off the shores of North Africa in 1943. He was then stationed aboard the USS Ranger, an aircraft carrier, serving mainly in the North Atlantic. Upon his discharge in Nov. 1945, he returned to South Dakota and married Mary Nixon on March 2, 1946. They lived north of Dallas where they enjoyed farming, ranching, and raising their two children. Mel was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at Dixon on March 28, 1956, where he held several offices for many years. He then became a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory. He was a member of the Dallas and Gregory America Legions and the Winner VFW. In his younger days his love was the game of "baseball." In grade school he played with his dad and uncles against local teams. In the Navy he was on the USS Ranger baseball team where he was invited to tryout for the professional team in San Diego, CA. Family responsibility kept Mel home, where he played Ball with Colome, Gregory, and the local town teams. On TV he enjoyed watching the Cubs and Twins. Mels favorite shows were westerns and especially "Gun smoke." He watched reruns after reruns many times. His family will not forget the card games, whistling and singing his favorite tunes, all the wild fishing trips, "Tater" soup and especially a good "Water Melon." He was a devoted husband and father. Nothing can replace the love he put in all our hearts. The Lord took Mel home on June 16, 2003, after a long struggle with cancer. He was buried on June 21, 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents.
