I have corrected the spelling in this transcription of it. Laurence's obituary states that after graduating from Iowa Wesleyan College, he farmed in the Agency area until 1932 when he moved to Ottumwa and studied law. Although his obituary doesn't say this, I am adding to his memorial that the reason for this decision was that Laurence lost his farm to the bank during the depression with only one payment left. After losing his farm, Laurence moved to Ottumwa and went to work for the Wapello County Clerk of Court, during which time he also studied for his law degree in the office of George Gillies. I feel that Laurence's determination to overcome his loss and create a new life for himself is inspirational and worth remembering. --------------- Obituary from Ottumwa Courier, December 13, 1971: Laurence M. Truitt, 78, died Sunday at 8 p.m. at his home at 1805 N. Ash. He was graduated from Agency High School in 1912 and received his bachelor's degree in 1916 from Iowa Wesleyan College, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He farmed near Agency until 1932 when he moved to Ottumwa. He studied law in the office of George Gillies and was admitted to the bar in 1936. He 1946 he formed a partnership with Walter T. McElroy, now deceased. His son Carroll Truitt joined the abstract and law firm in 1958. Laurence Truitt retired from practice Feb. 5, 1968. He was born in Marshall County, Ill., Jan. 7, 1893, the son of Morgan and Ophelia Jones Truitt. He moved to a farm northeast of Agency in 1908, and came to Ottumwa in 1932. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was past master of the Olive Branch Masonic Lodge. He was a director of People's Savings and Loan and a member of the Iowa Title Assn. He was a former deputy clerk of court for six years. He was married to Hazel Johnson June 14, 1916, in Agency. She survives. Also surviving is his son Carroll; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Whorton, and three grandchildren, all of Ottumwa. The service will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stanley Woeste officiating. Burial will be in Agency Cemetery. The Jay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
