LaVon died early Saturday morning, July 31, 2010 at Sanford Hospital, Webster, SD, after suffering an apparent heart attack while camping at Pickeral Lake. LaVon Scott Frerichs was born October 25, 1947 in Campbell, NE, to John and Ruth (Evers) Frerichs. He moved to the Columbia area at the age of five. He attended Columbia High School as a member of the last graduating class in 1966. On June 16, 1969, he married JoAnn Malsam in Aberdeen, SD. He worked at South Dakota Wheat Growers in Bath, SD, while farming with his father in Columbia. Upon his father's death, he took over the family farm, which he continued to farm until his death. LaVon was a member of Sacred Heart Parish of Westport, SD. He served on the Garland Township Board. He was also a multiple year Brown County Track Champion in the mid 1970's. He enjoyed spending special moments with his boys, either camping, fishing or hunting. He also loved teaching his grandson about farming and answering all of his questions. LaVon and his family enjoyed traveling to the Black Hills annually for snowmobile trips. LaVon and his wife took a trip of a lifetime to Brazil in 2003. They loved to take road trips on the spur of the moment. LaVon loved his Friday nights out with family and friends. He enjoyed his faithful canine companions. LaVon was preceded in death by his father, John Frerichs and maternal and paternal grandparents. Grateful for having shared LaVon's life are his wife, JoAnn Frerichs, Columbia; his children, Scott (Melanie) Frerichs, Mountain Top, PA, Jeff (Terrie) Frerichs, Columbia; special sister-in-law, Patricia (Scott) Brunmaier whom he also raised; his only grandson, Hunter; brother, Wally Frerichs, Yakima, WA; sisters, Rayma Pierson, Columbia, Janice Evers, Merced, CA and his mother, Ruth Frerichs, Aberdeen. Our lives are forever changed by his absence. He'll be remembered for his fine qualities, too numerous to mention. He was a big hearted and most generous man who's faith in God and love of family came first. He always thought before he spoke. He listened to others and never judged. We could always count on Von to give us the right advice about anything. He's our hero and always will be.
