SGT US ARMY WW II OLC BRONZE STAR PURPLE HEART Lawrence Hartman Published: Thursday, March 21, 2002 SENECA, Kan. — Services for Lawrence F. "Hezzie" Hartman, 79, of Seneca will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Lauer Funeral Home. Burial with military honors by the American Legion of Du Bois is under the direction of Lauer Funeral Home of Seneca. He died Saturday, March 16, 2002. He was born April 11, 1922, north of Seneca, where he graduated from high school in 1940. He farmed until October 1942, when he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He was a sergeant in the 382nd Infantry Regiment. He served in the Pacific Theater in the southern Philippines and in the liberation army. He was wounded on Leyte Island and on Okinawa and received the Purple Heart, among other decorations and citations. He was discharged Feb. 28, 1946, and returned to farm at Seneca. He was employed at Koelzer Lumber Co. at Bern and was a mechanic for Roy Ewing Motors at Sabetha. He built water shed dams around Ulysses, Kan. He was employed by Chauza Service Station and Klepper Oil, both in Du Bois. He was a member of the Chester R. Kerl Post No. 39 of the American Legion at Du Bois. Survivors include a brother, Harry of Lubbock. The family suggests memorials to the Chester R. Kerl Post of the American Legion or the Du Bois Cemetery. ----------------------------------------------------------- Lawrence, Hezzie to most that knew him, was a master mechanic. He knew just what part could be used from another vehicle that would work. He seemed a bit gruff and rough around the edges, but he was an honest man and knew his stuff! He was a collector of old cars and tractors, even had an Indian motorcycle, unfortunately this was stolen. He lived and died on the farm where he was born. He was a good man. Luella
