Gehlen, 76, died Saturday at Ellensburg Hospital. He was born in Owens, Iowa, August 23, 1897. He moved to Ellensburg in 1903 with his parents, and they settled on a farm. He entered the employee of Kelleher Motor Co. in 1916 and later purchased and became active manager for many years. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O.E. (Elks), Commander of the American Legion and served 13 years on the Ellensburg Rodeo Board. He was a veteran of WWI, a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church and the Kittitas County Field and Stream Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elmadine Werlich Gehlen in 1956. Survivors include his wife, Beth [Travers] Sorenson Gehlen; one son, Joesph of Ellensburg; three daughters, Mrs. Gene Skibeness of Edmonds, Mrs. Patricia Miller of Seattle, and Mrs. Molly Baker of Eugene, Oregon; two brothers, Dr. Joseph Gehlen of St. Paul and Walter Gehlen, Brother Benedict (OSB), St. Martin's Abbey; four grandchildren, four stepchildren, Stan Sorenson of Ellensburg, Dick and Jim Sorenson and Betty Suver all of Seattle. Rosary at St. Andrews tonight at 7:30 p.m.; Requiem Mass, 2 p.m., Tuesday at St. Andrews. Fr. Seamus Kerr will officiate; burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to Cancer Fund, in care of Mrs. K. J. Larimer, 209 E. Capitol. Ellensburg Daily Record, March 26, 1974 Lawrence J. "Zeke" Gehlen was born in Owens, Iowa on August 23, 1897. He moved to Ellensburg, Washington in 1903 with his parents where they settled on a farm. Lawrence entered the employ of Kelleher Motor Company in 1916, and later purchased an interest in the business and became active manager for many years. He was a veteran of World War I. Lawrence was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce, Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O.E., American Legion, Kittitas Field & Stream Club and served on the Board of the Ellensburg Rodeo for 13 years. Lawrence and his wife Elmadine lived at 701 E. Third for many years.
