She was the youngest child of William Lawson (born July 4, 1867, in Toledo Iowa, died April 2, 1937, Sterling, Colo.) and Viola Marie Clough Lawson Bailey Coe (born Dec. 1, 1869, in Toledo, Iowa, died Jan. 1, 1938, Guernsey, Wyo.). She was 101 when she passed away Dec. 14, 2006. Lela moved around in her earlier years and grew up in Merrick, Deuel and Lincoln counties in Nebraska, and in Butte County, S.D. On March 1, 1924, she married James Kennett Flynn in Julesburg, Sedgewick County, Colo. From the time of their marriage they made their home in North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebr., where James passed away on Oct. 11, 1965. Until her passing, Lela lived in the home that her father-in-law, James Flynn, built in 1902. Many people will remember her gracious manner, her sweet smile and that she walked all over North Platte every day well into her 90s. She was preceded in death by her father and mother and all six of her siblings: Ada Johnston, Bertha Barnett Messner, Lou C. Lawson, Iona Diener, Marion Cary and Edith Galusha Austin. Lela worked at F.W. Woolworth in the late 1940s until about 1960 and was also a volunteer at the North Platte Canteen during the war years. She cherished her faith as a converted Catholic of many years, keeping a deep devotion to the Holy Rosary and she attended St. Patrick's in North Platte. She was a lifetime member of many organizations and delivered meals on wheels until she was 90. A Rosary will be said at Carpenter Memorial Chapel Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be said Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, with the Rev. Jim Golka officiating, with burial in the North Platte Cemetery. Visitation hours at Carpenter Memorial Chapel are from 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
