It seems that at 11 o'clock that night... Read More	Lena Ripke was born in Wisconsin. She came to Buchanan Co., IA with her family about 1870. Lena Ripke marries John W. Jakway in 1886. They have 4 kids together. The evening of her death, Lena went to close a window against a severe storm and was struck by lightning and killed. She was only 35 years old. * * * * The Death of Mrs. Jakway This community was very much startled Wednesday morning when the word was received here that Mrs. John Jakway had been killed in the night by lightning. It seems that at 11 o'clock that night she arose from the bed to close a window, as it was raining. Just as she was in the act of lowering it, a sharp flash of lightning struck a tree, which stands so close to the house that it can almost be reached from the window, and that portion of the house was also struck by lightning, its course being easily traced from the roof downward. Mrs. Jakway lived a few minutes, during which time she was conscious and spoke to those near her. Everything possible was done to save her, but all to no avail. The last spark of life soon became extinct, and she was at rest. Mrs. Jakway was the daughter of Henry Ripke, Sr., of this town, and was 35 years old. She leaves a husband and four children, besides a large circle of friends, many of whom had known her since childhood.--Aurora Observer (Obit from the Aurora, Iowa, Bulletin Journal, Sept 5, 1895) * * * Miss Emma Ripke arrived from Kansas City Wednesday night, called by the death of her sister, Mrs. John Jakway. Last Tuesday night this vicinity was visited by one of the severest storms of the season. Rain fell in torrents for awhile, and vivid flashes of lightning followed by peal after peal of thunder. A barn was struck and burned for Mr. Shambaugh, who lives between here and Arlington; a steer was killed for D. Kreglow; a coop sheltered and thirty chickens killed for R. Cookman; but the saddest and most shocking of all was the death of Mrs. John Jakway, caused by a stroke of lightning as she was closing a window. Lena Ripke was born in Wisconsin, Aug. 6, 1860; came to Iowa with her parents when she was quite young. Aug. 8, 1886, she was married to John Jakway, and died Aug. 27, 1895. Four small children are left motherless, besides husband, father, brother and sister. The funeral was held from the house, Friday afternoon, Rev. Zabriske officiating. A very large crowd gathered to pay their respects to the dead. About ninety teams followed the remains to the East Side cemetery, where they were tenderly laid to rest.
