Description	:	Leo D. Treffer, 88, of Grand Island died Friday, June 13, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loup City, with the Rev. Mike Reiners officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City, with military honors by the Loup City American Legion Post #48. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Grand Island; daughter, Kimberly Harrington of Grand Island; grandsons, Brandon Harrington and Bryce Harrington, both of Grand Island; brothers, Loren Treffer of Broken Bow and Jack Treffer of Lincoln; and sisters, Sharon Kuhl of Lexington and Carolyn Hanson of Sioux City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Mark Treffer and Tad Treffer and son-in-law Roger Harrington; and brothers Joseph (Bud) Treffer; Glen Treffer; and Robert (Bob) Treffer. Leo D. Treffer was born July 22, 1923, in Rockville to Lovell and Pauline (Celmar) Treffer. He grew up and attended School District No. 53 by Rockville and received a Veteran's Honorary High School Diploma. He grew up on the family farm by Rockville and was the oldest of eight. He helped on the family farm and did various side jobs. He enlisted in the Idaho National Guard on Sept. 18, 1940 and was enlisted in active service in the Armed Forces of the United States of America on March 27, 1945, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He served as a warehouse foreman on a military base in New Caledonia during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 22, 1946, and returned home, where he continued to work farming and ranching. He married Phyllis Brocker, whom he met through mutual friends in Cicero, Ill., on Nov. 15, 1958. To this union three children were born: Mark, Tad and Kimberly. They made their home on a farm which he bought near Ashton. They owned and operated several farms in the area until retiring and moving to Grand Island in October 2000. He was a member in good standing with the American Legion for 47 years. He had a passion for horses, motorcycles, polka music, reading, being outside and working with his hands. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City is in charge of arrangements. Published in The Grand Island Independent on July 16, 2012
