Description	:	Former Hastings resident Leola A. (Merrill) Johnson, 86, of Central City died Thursday, Sept. 4, 1997, at Litzenburg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Berea Lutheran Church near Chappell with the Rev. Keith Pfeifly officiating. Burial will be in Berea Cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Johnson was born Sept. 25, 1910, to Walter H. and Bessie (Funk) Merrill in Lincoln. She lived in various communities; her father was a minister. She attended rural school near Gandy and graduated from Stapleton High School. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University. She was a rural school teacher for three years. She was a beautician in Ogallala and Chappell for six years. On Sept. 4, 1938, she married John Leonard Johnson in Chappell. He preceded her in death. She gave music lessons for more than 30 years. In 1993 she moved to The Kensington in Hastings. She moved to Community Care in Central City in August. She was a member of Berea Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Women and taught Sunday school. Survivors are one daughter, Pam Blackwell of Denver; one son, Rod of Grand Island; one brother, Merlin Merrill of Ruston, La.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She also was preceded in death by one sister.
