Leona Krueger was born October 21, 1914, to Simon and Ida (Van Boening) Krueger in Blue Hill, Nebraska. She was the oldest of 11 children, eight of whom survive her. She was baptized into the Christian faith on November 22, 1914, in Blue Hill, Nebraska. She reaffirmed her faith through the rite of confirmation in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Blue Hill on May 26, 1929. In that same year Leona moved with her family to Amherst. There she met and married Harry Brinkema on April 17, 1935. This union was blessed with five children: Garnett, Shirley, Norma, Harry Glen and Jenet. They first lived on a farm south of Venango, Nebraska until 1943, when they moved to a farm two miles west of Amherst. They lived on this farm, except for a two-year period when the family resided in Denver, until they returned in 1958. In 1968 they retired and moved to a home they built two miles east of Holyoke. Harry died April 10, 1990, and Leona remained in their home until 1995. For the final years of her life she resided in Holyoke. Leona was a life long member of the Amherst and Holyoke Lutheran churches. She was dedicated and faithful to the Lord, who had fully and richly blessed her life. She was the beloved grandmother to 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Leona was dedicated to her family, homemaking, gardening and cooking. These were the things she was happiest doing. Firm faith in God, hard work, determination and perseverance is the legacy passed on to her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Brinkema, grandchildren Holly Rodeman and John Templeton, her parents and brothers Chet and Andrew Krueger. She is survived by four daughters, Garnett and husband Mike Templeton of Denver, Shirley and husband Keith Rodeman of Amherst, Norma Dickinson of Sterling and Jenet Enninga of Fort Morgan; one son, Harry Glen Brinkema and wife Sally of Holyoke; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; four brothers; four sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends. Services were held at Zion Lutheran Church on April 18, 2006 with Pastor Gary Rahe officiating. Interment was in Holyoke Memorial Park with arrangements by Jeffers-Baucke Funeral Home. Memorials will be contributed to the Harry and Leona Brinkema Scholarship Fund.
