He grew up in Pierre where he attended school, graduating high school in 1943. After high school he attended Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree. He earned his Master’s Degree in School Administration from Colorado State College of Education, Greeley, CO. Leonard was drafted during World War II in 1945. He trained and was a surgical technician at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington DC. After the armistice was signed he was part of the in the occupational forces in Osaka, Japan. Leonard was united in marriage to Doris M. Balder on October 23, 1954 at St. Patrick’s Church, near St. Cloud, Minnesota. He worked as a High School Teacher and Principal and also for the South Dakota Department of Education where he worked for 37 years, retiring in 1989. Following his retirement he worked part-time as the Elementary Principal at St. Anthony’s School, Hoven, for nine years Leonard was a member of the Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol and Pierre Fire Department. He served as president of the Lions Club, and was also a member of the American Legion, VFW and Disabled American Veterans. Following his retirement he joined the Capitolian’s Barbershop Chorus and enjoyed volunteering at the Oahe Dam Visitors Center and the Christmas tree displays at the State Capitol. He looked forward to his coffee times with his friends at Burger King. He was invested in the endeavors of young people, serving as a leader of the Boy Scout Troop, driving swimmers to swim meets and assisting with swim meets. His home was the scene of many garage band practice sessions. He enjoyed flying as a young man when he owned his own airplane and in later years flying with his friend Paul Ewert and his son-in-law Don. He loved to sing and played piano, harmonica and violin. Leonard is survived by his wife of 60 years,two sons and one daughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; children: James, Wayne and Susan who died in infancy; siblings and their spouses brother John (Janice) Powell; sister Evelyn (Glenn) Randolph; and infant brothers Leland and Glen; in-laws Mary Balder (John) Lundborg, John Farley, Marvin and Lucietta Stang, Bernard Balder and James Balder. Leonard will be remembered for his wit and his love for his children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Countryside Hospice or the building fund at First United Methodist Church.
