MASON DIED ON WEDNESDAY Successful Merchant who had retired several years ago Funeral Services at his late home today One of Crisfield's former leading retail merchants, Leonard F. Mason, who retired from business several years ago, died at his home on First street Wednesday morning, from a complication of diseases. He was 75 years of age. Mr. Mason was born at Goodwill, near Pocomoke City, in Worcester county, the on of the late Mitchell Mason and Drucilla Hudson Mason. He came to this community about 55 years ago, and for a number of years followed the water. He then decided to enter business ashore, and engaged in the seafood business for a time, being one of the first to collect and ship oyster crabs from Crisfield. Later, he engaged in the retail mercantile business and was very successful in that field of endeavor. This was especially the case, with the store now owned and operated by his son, Leonard F Mason, Jr., on Broadway. It was here that Mr. and Mrs. Mason built up a large business, a part of which was serving hot meals to the employees of the Palm Beach factory nearby. Several years ago he retired from business and since then has been living quietly at his home on First St. Mr. Mason was a man of many fine qualifies. He was energetic, honest, economical, and had a good head for business. Few, if any of our citizens, were more courteous in speech and manner on all occasions than he. Mr. Mason made a success of his life in spite of the handicap of lack of higher education. Opportunity to secure an education was limited when he was a youth. Boys began to work on farms and elsewhere at an earlier age. So for most of his life he was a worker who, when the time came that he could do so, took care of what he made to have it take care of him when he retired from business. He owned several nice pieces of real estate in the city, and kept his property in a fine state a repair. A useful citizen, and a man who had hundreds of real friends, his passing was indeed a shock to the community, even though it was known that his health had not been good for some months. Funeral services will be held from his late home this afternoon, Friday, at 2:20 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. R. Bicking, pastor of Immanuel Methodist Church, and Rev. C. H. Shaw. Interment will be in the Crisfield cemetery. Pall-bearers will be Henry Bedsworth, John Goldsborough , Norris Evans, Weldon Massey, Clifford Daugherty and Walter McCready. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Catherine Christy Mason, two sons, Judge of the Orphans Court Leonard F. Mason, Jr., and Norman T. Mason, prominent coal dealer and member of the Welfare Beard of Somerset county, and one daughter, Mrs. Ida Evans, all of whom reside in Crisfield. One brother, John Edward Mason, of Crisfield, and a sister, Mrs. J. A. Bonneville, of Merchantville, N. J., also survive.
