She was thirteen years younger than her brother, Dallas, and was named for her father’s oldest sister, Leota Belle Throne. She was 93 years old. Beth was the second child of Sarah Della Vaniman and John Emory Throne. She was thirteen years younger than her brother, Dallas, and was named for her father’s oldest sister, Leota Belle Throne. Both parents had worked as teachers and served as missionaries in Singapore in 1920 and 1921. Beth’s early years were spent surrounded by family in the family home in Pomona, California. In school, Beth took part in the debate team, pitched on the softball team, played field hockey and basketball and was known for her running speed. During fifth grade, she memorized many poems that stayed with her through life. In June 1945, Beth graduated from La Verne College with a major in history and a teaching credential. On July 24, she delivered Gary, while husband, Dick, was away at war. They slept in her parents’ living room. In the mid 1950s, Beth joined the Junior Women’s Club of San Leandro after the family had established its first home there. She was also a Brownie troop organizer. Between 1960 and 1963, the family followed Dick’s job to Rochelle, Illinois. This is where Beth served as a Camp Fire Girl and Girl Scout leader, joined PEO, learned to play golf and bridge, entertained corporate guests and trained for her future role as Del Monte Corporation’s “greatest asset”. In 1963, the family returned to California and the Bay Area community of Piedmont. Beth continued many of her community activities here. Additionally, she served the Piedmont Community Church as a deacon and member of the Altar Guild. She also became a member of the American Field Service Adult Chapter and the Invest-in-America Northern California Council. In 1974, Beth took up china painting, which she would pursue for 30 years. Beth loved to travel and often accompanied Dick on business trips. Trips that made an impression on her as a child had included a road trip home from picking up a new car; it started in Detroit and took a southerly route through New Orleans. And, in 1939, a road trip to the New York World’s Fair gave her a glimpse into what all of America would become after the Great Depression and war. In her 2002 memoir, Making a Difference (co-written with Dick), Beth wrote, “My life has been surprisingly itinerant for a little girl born to school teachers in tiny La Verne, California. I’ve been to six of the seven continents. Maybe I was destined for such a life all along!” While Beth was very determined like her mother, she subordinated her professional career as a teacher to Dick’s professional career at Del Monte. On the subject of marriage, her handwritten notes on the outline for Making a Difference read: Marriage is based on mutual love and respect. You must keep a sense of humor. Marriage is a partnership with which to share the good and not-so-good times. Marriage is all about growing together. Beth passed away on July 30, 2016 at her home in Penn Valley, California, at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, Richard Gordon Landis, this past February. She leaves behind her wonderful family, including her sons, daughter, nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law. Beth felt blessed by God to have enjoyed such a loving and devoted family. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Peace Lutheran Church (828 W. Main Street, Grass Valley, CA 95945). Reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Foothills (11270 Rough & Ready Highway, Grass Valley, CA 95945).
