Description	:	Lester Henry Ernest Schleufer, son of Henry and Augusta (Torbek) Schleufer, was born March 26, 1914, on a farm in Thayer County, Nebraska, near Deshler. He departed this life on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 87 years. Read More	Lester Henry Ernest Schleufer, son of Henry and Augusta (Torbek) Schleufer, was born March 26, 1914, on a farm in Thayer County, Nebraska, near Deshler. He departed this life on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 87 years. As a young boy he attended Garfield rural school in Nuckolls County, Nebraska. After he left school, Lester did farm work for nine years before going to Curtis Wright in Buffalo, New York. There he was employed in sheet metal work on P-40 and C-46 airplanes (in the "V for Victory" days), before entering the U.S. Army on January 25, 1944. After training at several different places, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii, serving in the Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion. Lester received his discharge on March 9, 1946, with the rank of Sergeant. After his release from the service, he returned to farming. December 15, 1948, at Salem Lutheran Church, Lester was united in marriage to Virginia Shaw. They farmed in the Nuckolls County area for 25 years, retiring in 1973. Lester was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent and church treasurer. He was a member of Blue Valley Home Board, Lutheran Brotherhood, Nelson American Legion Post #187 and Farmer's Union Cooperative. In his spare time Lester enjoyed doing hatch hook crafts, gardening, playing cards, fishing and traveling. Lester's faith was very important to him, reading the Bible had always been an important activity. He never however, allowed any of these to diminish his love for his wife and family. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Superior, Nebraska; one son, Irvin Schleufer and his wife Murlene of Nora, Nebraska; two daughters, Barbara Stutzman and her husband Roy of Nora and Shirley Peters and her husband Dale of Hastings, Nebraska; one sister, Norma Way of Nampa, Idaho; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Salem Lutheran Church, south of Nelson, Nebraska, with the Rev. Robert Hoeft officiating. Interment was in Salem Lutheran Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to the church or Nelson Good Samaritan Center.
