Lester Marlin Johnson, 79 years of age, of Lawrence, Kansas (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2006 surrounded by his family at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Lester was born July 12, 1927 at Hildreth, Nebraska, the third of four children of Alfred and Matilda (Jensen) Johnson. Lester received his education at Hildreth, graduating from Hildreth High School with the class of 1947. On October 24, 1948 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Joyce LaDawn Grote at Wilcox, Nebraska and to this union four children were born: Daniel, Jennifer, Marlin and Neil. The family made their home in Holdrege, where Lester focused his hard-working efforts employed for 33 years with C.A. Christiansen Construction Company before going into business for himself. Lester then formed Johnson Construction, which he ran until his retirement due to health restrictions in 1995. The couple continued to reside in Holdrege until moving to Lawrence, Kansas in May of 2006. He was a kind soul, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A truly wonderful man will be missed by his family and many friends. Lester leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 58 years, Joyce Johnson of Lawrence, KS; three children: Jennifer Karmazin and her husband, Wayne of Lawrence, KS, Marlin Johnson and his wife, Patti of Lexington, Nebraska and Neil Johnson and his wife, Kiptara of Woodstock, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Cindy Johnson of Salina, Kansas; his grandchildren: Christine Johnson, Chad and Amber Johnson, Kelly and Katie Karmazin, Traci and John Lyons, Tara Johnson, Cathy and Mike Hill, Ryan Johnson, Stephanie Johnson, Christopher Johnson and Cody Johnson; his great-grandchildren: Kamdyn, Mason, Emily, Keelie, Marshall and Julia; two sisters: Mabel Unsinn of Los Angeles, CA and Milrae Seeman of Ozark, AL; sister-in-law, Mary Virginia Johnson of New Braunfels, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Daniel and brother, Kenneth Johnson. Lester will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. A memorial has been established in Lester's memory and suggested to the American Cancer Society.
