SHIELDS PASSES AWAY The funeral services of L.C. Shields were held from the (Bayard) Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 26 at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. Andrew Dugger, of Stanberry, Mo., assisted by Rev A. E. George of the local church. Rev. Dugger used as his text Rev. 14, 13. His sermon was full of comfort and helpfulness. He pointed out how essential it was for each of us to prepare for the highe (sic) life and spoke especially of the blessings and comfort that come to one who has led a life wholly dedicated to the Master's work. A quartet composed of Law Strauser, Lester Grant, Mrs. Maude Scott and Mrs. Hazel Strauser sang beautiful hymns intended to bring comfort to the sorrowing hearts. The flowers were many and beautiful. Besides the ones given by different individuals were large bunch boquets (sic) given by the high school and Domestic Science Club. The casket was completely covered with them. Levi Calvin Shields, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Shields was born at Millersburg. Ill. March 2, 1864 and died Dec. 24, 1917 at Bayard, Iowa. At the age of eighteen with his parents he moved to a farm six miles north of Bayard and for twenty eight years made this his home. November 15,1898, at Carroll, he was united in marriage to Miss Myrtle Sheaffer of Coon Rapids. This union proved to be a most happy one and developed into a beautiful love and devotion which deepened with the passing years. During his seven years residence in Bayard his kindness and devotion to his family was almost proverbial and his one chief aim seemed to be to make his home a happy one. He has been in failing health for the past two years but has borne his affliction with patience and fortitude and passed away as peacefully as he had always lived. In 1903 he became a member of the Church of God and until the day of his death he remained a faithful, constant believer in the principles and doctrines of his church. His was a deep and abiding faith, firm and unmistakable, against which the stress and strain of life could never prevail. His one chief aim in life was to do his Master's will. His cheerful, happy nature radiated kindness, helpfulness and friendliness to all who came within its circle. He met the duties and responsibilities of life with a fine courage day by day and unstintingly gave of his best. The memory of his life is a beautiful benediction upon all who came under his influence. What splendid evidence of the power and grace of God. What clear and convincing proof of the immortality of the soul is such a life as this. After leaving the farm he was engaged in the nursery business and made a success of it. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and son Loyd, a twin brother, Eli Alvin, and a sister Mrs. H T. Whitehall, all of whom live near Bayard. The relatives and friends who came to attend the funeral services were Mrs. Shields' brother, C.C. Sheaffer of Omaha, her sister, Mrs. A.L. Thompson of Des Moines, Mr. Hill, President of the Des Moines Nursery Co., of Des Moines, Mrs. Weaver, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Libby Shawd and Mr. and Mrs. A.P. Kinnick of Coon Rapids. Interment was made in Willow Cemetery. The bereaved wife and son and near relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the whole community in their sorrow.
