She was seventy-eight years of age and had lived in Scranton Township for sixty years. She was seventy-eight years of age and had lived in Scranton Township for sixty years. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the Scranton Methodist Church with burial in the Willow Township Cemetery. While she had been an asthmetic sufferer for many years, her death resulted from a stroke of apoplexy. Excerpt from the Scranton Journal, Sep. 5, 1935: Mary Emmaline Shields, daughter of James and Eliza Shields, was born in Marion County, Indiana, August 24, 1857, and passed away August 29, 1935 at the home of her daughter in Scranton, Iowa, at the age of seventy eight years and five days. At the age of four years she with her parents moved to Keithsburg, Ill., where they resided until she was united in marriage to Henry T. Whitehall in 1875. She and her husband then moved to Greene County, Iowa, making their home on the farm south of Scranton, where she continued to reside until six years ago, at which time she moved to Scranton, where she has lived until she was called to rest. To this union two daughters were born, Mrs. Elmer Sheffield and Mrs. O.L. Goodrich. Mrs. Sheffield preceded her mother in death by twenty three years. Early in life, Mrs. Whitehall embraced the Christian faith and afterward united with the Methodist Church and endeavored a live, a true and devoted life. In 1882 she with her husband united with the Church of God, in which faith she remained faithful until death called her. In 1896 her husband was ordained as a minister in the Church of God. To this true christian woman came many trials and tribulations, besides the many cares of farm life. She had the constant care of an invalid husband, who suffered with rheumatism for over thirty years of his life was a helpless invalid. He died seventeen years ago. She leaves to mourn their loss one brother, E.A. Shields of Churdan, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. O.L. Goodrich of Scranton; two grandsons, Vernon E. Sheffield, of Meridan, Idaho, and Clyde R. Thomas, of Scranton, besides other relatives and many old friends and neighbors. While suffering many hardships and cares of life, Mrs. Whitehall had always been true and faithful in her duty to her God and fellow man. She lived a true devoted life for God and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those about her when within her power to do so. Her devoted life to her Lord and family will long be remembered by those who know her best.
