Read More	The Scranton Journal, Feb 3,1938 ELI ALVIN SHIELDS BURRIED AT WILLOW Former Scranton Resident Died at Age of 74; Funeral Sunday Eli Alvin Shields, son of James and Meliza Shields, was born in Keithsburg, Illinois, March 2, 1864 and passed away Januray 28th, 1938 at the age of 73 years, 10 months, and 26 days. He and his parents and twin brother, Levi Calvin, moved from Illinois to Greene County, Iowa in 1882. He was united in marriage to Carrie Alice Conn in the year 1899. They resided in Willow Township for 32 years and then moved to Bristol Township in the year 1931. A year ago he retired and moved to Jefferson. To Mr. and Mrs. Shields were born twelve children, they are, James H. Shields and Mrs. Lloyd Johnson of Carroll, Iowa, Mrs.Willis Boyer of Estherville, Iowa; Mrs. Fay Johnson of Porterville, Calif.; Mrs. Murl Brafford of Scranton, Iowa; Harold Shields of Glidden, Iowa; and Lester, Calvin, Romaine and Della at home. An infant son Harry Alfred preceded his father in death at the age of two years in 1921. Besides his wife and 11 children he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Shields, his twin brother Levi Calvin Shields, 22 grandchildren and a niece, Mrs. Orlo Goodrich and son Clyde of Scranton. His sister Mrs. H. T. Whitehall of Scranton, Iowa and Mrs. Charles Olswold of Rock Island, Ill., have preceded him in death. Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church in Jefferson at 2:30 Sunday afternoon Jan. 30, 1938. Rev. Roy Longfellow of New Hampton in charge. Pallbearers: Chas. Ragan, A.B. Jones. Foster Cilby, A.R. Albright, George Anderson, and Alva Flack. Burial was made in the Willow Township Cemetery. Mr. Shields was always a kind and loving husband and father. He was a member of the Baptist Church. His Illness was of a very short duration as he suffered a stroke Wednesday morning and was taken to the hospital but never regained consciousness and passed away at 12:20 Friday afternoon. All of his children and his wife were able to be at his bedside with the exception of one daughter, Mrs. Fay Johnson who resides in California and was unable to come.
