Born in Upper Kennetcook on January 30, 1922, he was a son of the late Ruel and Hazel (Hennigar) Garby. Born in Upper Kennetcook on January 30, 1922, he was a son of the late Ruel and Hazel (Hennigar) Garby. Lew joined the Canadian Army and during the Second World War he served four years with the R.C.E.M.E. repairing and maintaining vehicles. Two of these years were overseas, mostly in England. After his discharge, Lew opened 'Garbys Esso' with his brother Gerry in Upper Kennetcook and with his wife Claire, he also ran the community post office for 35 years. Lewis’ passion was playing the fiddle. At age 10, he sold Gold Medal Seeds and won a prize, his first fiddle. He taught himself to play by ear by listening to fiddlers in the neighborhood. By age 12 he was already playing for community dances with his brother Laurie on the guitar. Lew had been a member of the Maritime Fiddlers Association since its beginning. He had won numerous fiddling awards and his proudest achievement was in 1986, winning the 1st place trophy in the over 60 class in the Maritime Old Time Fiddling Championship. Lew was a member of the Country Rhythm Band for a number of years. He also played with Elmer MacKinnon and the Acadians in the Truro area. He appeared as a guest on the Up Home Tonight T.V. show hosted by Gordon Stobbe in the 1980s. He had been a member of the Kings Fiddlers Club for many years and thought nothing of driving a 140 km. round trip to Wolfville twice monthly. He and his wife Claire enjoyed playing music together with Claire accompanying him on the piano until she passed away in 2003. Lew grew up playing many sports including softball, tennis and badminton. In later years he always enjoyed watching the Blue Jays ball games. He was an avid volunteer member of the community, always willing to lend a hand. Lew will be greatly missed by his daughters, Linda (Murray), Lantz; Joanne (Cari), Canning; Suzanne (Rick), Enfield; granddaughter, Angela (DeWayne), Kennetcook; grandson, Mike Miller, Elmsdale; granddaughter, Tammy, Canning; sister, Estelle, Kennetcook; brothers, Laurie, Kentville; Gerald, Upper Kennetcook. He was predeceased by his wife, Claire; sister, Alice and infant sister, Marion. Special thanks to the Colchester East Hants Palliative Care Team, Victorian Order of Nurses, Nursing staff on 4 south, Dr. Michele MacLean, Barb Campbell (RN) and staff at the Kennetcook Medical Centre. Cremation has taken place with no visitation by family request. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 23 at 2 p.m. in J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Hwy. 354, Kennetcook. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Colchester East Hants Palliative Care Team or charity of choice.
