Read More	SLOAN, CHARLES PORTER PORTER—Charles Porter Sloan passed away Wednesday, July 19, 1972, in the hospital in Geneva, Neb., at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 20 days. He was the son of the late Charles H. and Emma (Porter) Sloan, long active in the affairs of this area. Porter was born in Geneva, Neb., January 29, 1894. He attended Geneva public schools and graduated from high school in 1911. In high school he participated in basketball and track. After graduating from high school, he attended the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska, four years. In his junior year he was made a member of the Viking Honorary Society. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta social fraternity. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Service January 11, 1918, served overseas, and was honorably discharged from service December 7, 1918. Under the head of remarks on his discharge are written: “His services have been honorable and Faithful” which words typify his life character. After returning from military service, he resumed farming near Geneva, being particularly interested in cattle feeding. He did much reading and was well informed. He enjoyed visiting with his friends, particularly fellow farmers and cattle feeders. He was a kind and modest person, devoted to his family and friends. His integrity, broad knowledge and judgment were always an inspiration to his children. Early in life he joined the Methodist church in Geneva. He was married to Lillian Stiefer, his surviving wife, February 13, 1919. To them were born four children. Charles John and Lillian Marie died in infancy. Blaine Sloan, a surviving son, is director, General Legal Division, Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations, in New York. Kathryn Margaret Ashby (the wife of Sherman Ashby) resides in Geneva. Also surviving him are his son-in-law, Sherman Ashby, his daughter-in-law, Patricia Sand Sloan; a brother-in-law, Grady Corbitt; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Esther Sloan, and the following grandchildren: DeAnne Sloan (Mrs. Christopher Riddle), Amherst, Mass., Michael Blaine Sloan, Charles Porter Sloan II, Catherine Elizabeth Ashby, Carol Frances Ashby; and sister Ethel Sloan Corbitt (Mrs. Grady Corbitt) of Geneva, and brother, William W. Sloan of Eugene, Ore. A brother, Frank Blaine Sloan, preceded him in death, losing his life in 1918 while serving his country overseas. Funeral services were held at the United Methodist church of Geneva at 10:30 a. m. Saturday, July 22, with Rev. John E. Stayton officiating. Mrs. Clarence Najmon of Geneva sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and “How Great Thou Art” accompanied by Mrs. Norval Lomax of Geneva, organist. Pallbearers were Robert Bailey, John Brooke, Gary Richards, Melvin Motis, Bernard Weiss and Hugh Wilkins. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 27 July 1972 page 5.
