Born on March 7, 1935, she was the youngest child of William Kelly and Emma Nix Plemmons. Lillian was loved by her husband of 61 years, Frank, who preceded her in death. She was a stellar example of a Godly wife and mother to her five children. She spoiled and indulged her four grandchildren, who were always greeted with a bright smile and open arms when they visited her house. Lillian spent her career as a Rural Letter Carrier with the US Postal Service. She was McDowell County’s first female rural carrier. She was loved by the patrons she served and enjoyed her daily interactions with folks who greeted her at their mailboxes. Her gracious personality earned her many friends. Lillian and Frank were well-known in their community of Montford Cove. They were founding members and dedicated leaders of the Montford Cove Community Club. They enjoyed opening their home to neighbors, where visitors always found a pot of hot coffee and good conversation waiting. She was an extraordinary cook, and was best known for her made-from-scratch pound cakes. Three children remain to cherish her memory; Deborah Wilkerson; Sandra Wilkerson Queen and husband Marty; and Tim Wilkerson and wife Kari, all of Marion. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Heather Ledford, Andy Roland and wife, Stephanie, and Avery Wilkerson. Two sisters, Hazel Freshour and Ruth Sigmon, as well as a number of nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her husband, Lillian was preceded in death her parents, two sons, Michael and Rick Wilkerson, a grandson, Joshua Ledford, a sister and two brothers. A memorial service honoring Lillian’s life will be held on Sunday, January 10 at 3:00 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, with Dr. Tom Walker and Mr. Jim Davidson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at a private service at Montford Cove Baptist Church Cemetery.
