Driver, 62, killed in collision Ledyard - A New London man was killed early today in a head-on collision on Route 12 near the Groton town line. Lloyd E. Corchinski, 62, of 78 Washington St., was dead on arrival at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, following the accident, which occurred shortly before 1 a.m. The driver of the other car, Charles D. Burkett, no age available, of the Submarine Base, was in critical condition this morning in the intensive care unit of Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he is being treated for multiple injuries. State Police said Corchinski was southbound when his car was struck by Burkett's vehicle, which was northbound but had crossed into the southbound lane. The accident still is under investigation. Man Killed, Another Hurt In Auto Mishap LEDYARD - A 62-year-old New London man died and a 30-year old sailor was critically injured as a result of a two-car, head-on collision on Rt. 12 early Thursday, state police said. Police said Lloyd E. Corchinski, street address unknown, was dead on arrival at Lawrence and Memorial Hospitals, New London. Charles D. Burkett of the U. S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton was admitted to Lawrence and Memorial with multiple head, leg, arm and skull injuries. A hospital spokesman said he was in critical condition Thursday night. Police said Corchinski was driving south about 1 a.m. when Burkett's car, which was going north, crossed the highway and struck Corchinski's head-on. "John" Corchinski, 62 of 78 Washington St., who was killed early Thursday in an accident on Route 12 in Ledyard. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Kelley-Bernier & Freemont Funeral Home. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetary. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Corchinski was born June 26, 1916, in Montville, the son of William and Elsie Pierce Corchinski. He served in the Army during World War II in Europe. Obituary Services today for Mr. Corchinski New London - Funeral services were conducted today for Lloyd E. "John" Corchinski, 62, of 78 Washington St., who was killed Thursday in an accident in Ledyard. Mr. Corchinski was a truck driver for Ben Steinman & Sons Inc. for 12 years and was previously a truck driver for Beit Brothers for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in New London. He married the former Lillian Robinson June 29, 1939, in Springfield, Mass. She died May 15, 1969. Notes Lloyd Corchinski's family traces its roots directly back to Mayflower passenger William Bradford who later became the first governor of Massachusetts. He was also a direct descendant of Jonathan Rudd who was married at Bride Brook in 1646. His cousins include Gov. Hiram Bingham, Pres. Millard Fillmore and Supreme Court Justice David Souter.
