Read More	Lois Hall April 13, 1928 - December 18, 2012 Born on April 13, 1928, an only child to Charlie and Mary Wilson, Lois Hall lived on the same farmstead she was raised on, 30 miles west of Hwy 83 on Bad River Road until her recent illness. She also ran a similar operation as her parents had, a cow/calf (Black Angus) and horse operation. They hayed enough to provide feed for their own livestock through the winters. "I never had a bicycle, but always had a saddle horse of my own!" said Hall. She reminisced about the excitement her family had when she was in high school and they got their very first telephone installed, and their addition to the mail route! When remembering her youth, Hall couldn't help but laugh when she recalled unexpected guests always showing up at meal time! She always made sure to cook extra, for that was about the only sure-fire way to make sure you caught the person you were looking to talk to before telephones were available! Since the steam engines on the Chicago/Northwestern rail could only travel 10 miles at a time before they needed to stop and fill the steam engines with water, small towns popped up every ten miles along the rail. These small towns needed teachers for the children, so Lois stepped up. When Lois was 19, she started teaching school in Pheba (about 20 miles West of VanMeter). She had all eight grades, with about 16 children! She then moved to Hayes to teach, and met Frank Hall. On May 23, 1950, they were married and soon were blessed with three children Ronda, Charlotte and Richard (Rick). The family of five lived Northeast of VanMeter for eight years before moving back to the Wilson Ranch. For five years she taught school in her living room until she had too many students, and moved her class to River Butte, and then New Liberty. Eventually retiring from teaching in Hayes. Frank and Lois were always involved with the high school community with their children and grandchildren, helping out where they could; therefore, when Cottonwood needed bucking horses for their rodeos, the Halls supplied! Lois was the Matriarc that raised a very tight-knit clan that always helped each other out. Lois was proud that the ranch operation would stay in the family and be kept running smoothly. When branding season came around, you would have been sure to find at least 40 people (both family and friends) doing the hands on work of roping and dragging (rope calf and drag them to the fire and branding iron). She said if you're out there and not in the kitchen helping…you sure better be in the branding corral. Lois was a member of Victory Club, Midland Museum, Midland Library and Old Stanley County Historical Society. Lois enjoyed reading local history, gardening, looking at the livestock – cattle & horses, and most of all spending time with family and friends. Lois is survived by two daughters, Ronda (Lawrence) Schofield of Midland, SD, and Charlotte Hall of Midland, SD; one son, Richard (Arlette) Hall of Fort Pierre, SD; six grandsons, Jay (Jody) Gillaspie of Fort Pierre, SD, Kyle (Lacey) Schofield of Woodstock, GA, Brett Schofield of Travis AFB, Sacramento, CA, Logan Hall of Denver, CO, Talon and Tyrel Hall, both of Fort Pierre, SD; one granddaughter, Twyla Bestgen of Sturgis, SD and 10 great-grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death by her husband Frank, parents and one step-grandson.
