Lois was born on March 22, 1934, in Fort Pierre to Wayne and Mary (Doty) Prince. She grew up on the Prince Ranch in Stanley County, attending school in Hayes and then Fort Pierre where she graduated in 1952. After high school she went on and attended Black Hills State Teachers College and International Correspondence Schools for interior decorating. She was united in marriage to James McFarling on Dec. 17, 1952. To this union five sons were born. Lois worked as a typist for Audits and Accounts and for South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. She was also a professional seamstress and co-owned and operated Pierre Furniture. She enjoyed painting (art), gardening and traveling, but especially she enjoyed working with people in the furniture business. She is survived by her husband, James, of Pierre; five sons, Bill (Betty) McFarling, of Spearfish, Dan (Dawn) McFarling, of Renton, Wash., John McFarling, of Casa Grand, Ariz., Dave (Terry) McFarling, of Pierre, and Gary (Teresa) McFarling, of Lincoln, N.D.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Harry (Veona) Prince, of Hayes; sisters-in-law, Carol Prince, of Hayes, Betty (Art) Boyle, Margret (Mike) Mikkelson, Donna Thaden and Patty (Marc) Wernli; brothers-in-law, Charles (Linda) McFarling; aunts and uncles, Floyd (Una May) Brotherton, of Thompson Falls, Mont., and Eva Doty, of Pierre; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Mary; in-laws, Charles Sturgis and Mildred Margaret (Leach) McFarling; brother, Charles Prince; brother-in-law, Marvin Swan; and sister-in-law, Shirley Swan. Memorials may be directed to First Congregation United Church of Christ or Hospice.
