Obituary Mrs. John F. Kelly: Mrs Lola Maude Kelley, 84, of Colony died Saturday at the Allen County Hospital. Mrs. Kelley was born March 30, 1879 at East Springfield, Ohio. Her husband, John F. Kelley died in 1936. she was a member of the Methodist church of Pawnee City. Survivors include three sons, Harold Albert Kelley, Harry L. Kelley and Virgil LeRoy Kelley, all of Colony, a daughter, Mrs. Hellen Florence Payton of Topeka; a brother, Charles L. Story of Bakersfield, Calif., and three sisters, Mrs. Ethyl Heywood of South Gate, Calif., Mrs. Bertha Miller of Beatrice, Neb., and Hazel Josephine Story of Needles, Calif. Funeral services will be at 2 PM tomorrow at the Farris Funeral Home in Colony with the Rev. Gene Damewood officiating. Burial will be at Colony, (Kansas) Cemetery. Interview with granddaughter, Ruth Payton Anastas: My grandmother, Lola Maude, came from Annapolis (Salem), Ohio to Pawnee City, Nebraska when she was 3 years old. After her marriage, when she and her husband moved to Lebanon, they went in a covered wagon. Indians were still about out there and would come to the house. Grandad (John F. Kelley) always kept silver dollars and if he was not at home when they came, Lola Maude would give them a dollar, and they would go away. If she didn't give them a dollar, they would take what ever if no man was around. She remembered that Indians would come to the door begging for 50 cents to buy liquor. Her paternal uncle by marriage, David Butler, was the 1st Governor of Nebraska in the late 1860's, and the family was relatively well off during this period. Her Aunt Alice was a spinster, and it was Aunt Alice's money that sent Lola to the Academy. This was quite a rare educational opportunity for a girl back then. Lola and her husband had farmed in western Kansas, before moving to Colony. Her sons farmed in the Colony area. After her husband's untimely death, she lived with her various sons, and lastly her daughter, Hellen and her husband Albert Payton in Topeka, Kansas until the estate of her Aunt Alice Story was settled upon the death of Alice's nephew and Lola's cousin Claude Story. Lola then purchased a house in Colony, Kansas with her part of the settlement and savings. Sheila Anastas: "Great-grandma" Kelley lived in an old house in Colony, Kansas in her later years, that she purchased with her share of the proceeds of her Aunt Alice's estate, so she no longer had to live with her grown children and their families. It had a wrap around porch on three sides, with a build-in chicken coop under the old fashioned added-on bathroom, at the back of the house. The stairs leading up to the porch had holes in some of the boards, it wasn't in too good of shape. The bathroom had a claw tub and a wringer washing machine. My mother told me that Great-grandma practiced folk remedies. She would tie a string around her warts to make them fall off. She would plant seeds at a certain time of the moon. You needed to cut a "v" in your toenails to prevent ingrown nails, and couldn't wash you hair during "that time of the month". Great-grandmother didn't trust banks. She kept money in a glass jar, and late at night while keeping careful watch for her neighbors, she would go out to her garden and visit the jar. Sweet potato and other plants ran riot, from bottles and jars, up the ruffled curtained windows at each end of the kitchen. The wooden kitchen table by the window was covered with red and white plaid oilcloth. It was a nice room to sit in, and it had a rocking chair. Her living room had a piano, covered with a pink and brown velvet fringed cloth. On it were many, many framed photos of relatives and their families, which overflowed onto shelves along the wall. Lola was self taught and played the piano at the Methodist Episcopal church. There was an upstairs used for storage, but I wasn't allowed to go up even thought I really wanted to, lest I fall down the steep stairs. Great-grandma used the telephone hung on the wall in the bedroom. It was a brown wooden box phone with a crank. She would crank a few times and listen with the little receiver attached to the box by a cord. Finally, there would be a lady's voice announcing "Central" and Great-grandma told the lady what number she wanted to call. Grandma hung up the receiver on a hook, and a little while later a bell inside the box rang, Great-grandma picked the receiver off the hook and the person Great-grandma called was on the other end of the line. Great-grandma had to always be quick and to the point on the phone, because "Central" listened in on the conversations. When my parents and grandparents traveled from Topeka, and visited Great-grandma on a Sunday, a man would come in his truck to deliver live chickens, which had their legs tied together. She would hold them like you would a lamp, and plant their legs on the perches in the coop, then shut and latch the wooden door. When it was time to kill the chickens, she would lay them on the grass and cut off their heads with the heel of her old fashioned, lace-up, black shoes. Then the chicken's legs were untied and the headless bodies would "run" around the yard until the blood stopped flowing. It seemed to me, then about six years old, that I was being chased. Meanwhile the eyes keep blinking from the severed heads lying on the grass. This was terrifying, and yet fascinating! I witnessed the event the several times we visited, before we moved away from Kansas. Great-grandma made very good fried chicken and gravy on an ancient black wood stove that had porcelain tear-drop knobs, and four pot lids, and an oven. Another method she used was to whirl the chicken around by its head until she was left only holding the head. Letter from Beverly Swim to Sheila Anastas 10/29/1968 "Aunt Lola was my favorite aunt. She used to come up to great-grandmother and grandad [James Mason] Story's and she would always bake me an apple pie.
